Friends of the Los Angeles River Partners with Frogtown Artwalk and the Blake Lofts for New Clean-up Site on May 9th

Los Angeles, CA – May 4, 2009 – Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) is pleased to announce that they are partnering with the Blake Lofts and the Frogtown Artwalk for a new clean up site along the Los Angeles River behind the lofts, 1839 Blake Avenue, in the burgeoning Elysian Valley neighborhood, often referred to as Frogtown, after the frog population that once thrived in the adjacent LA River. Frogtown became a clean-up site after Blake Lofts resident and noted local photographer Paul Redmond ran into FoLAR founder Lewis McAdams walking along the river. They determined that the Frogtown area was a perfect clean-up site as the area is bordered by the river and many of the area’s artists, business owners and residents are concerned environmentalists. Redmond is now the site captain for the Frogtown river clean-up taking place from 9am – 12 noon on May 9th.

The Frogtown clean-up will take place in the Blake Lofts parking lot adjacent to a portion of the river's natural bottom in the heart of Elysian Valley. All neighbors, the Frogtown Arts Collective and green minded businesses are invited to make the cleanup, both rewarding and informative.

The Green Committee from the Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce will be on site informing the public on green issues, along with their giant plastic bag ball. Local environmental arts collective Grenememe along with photographer Paul Redmond will collaborate on “Trashy Art” a map and storytelling project around the clean-up, on a 12 foot graphic of the river from Fletcher to Riverside. Along with clean-up volunteers, they will document weird and not so wonderful trash through physical collection, photography and narrative. Redmond will set up the Frogtown Fotobooth on site, documenting the event through portraits of volunteers and their "river finds". At the end of the day Greenmeme will take the mural and translate it into a graphic illustration. The “Trashy Art” project will be shown at the next Frogrown Artwalk, other local events and online.

Participants are encouraged to wear clothes they can get dirty and sturdy shoes. Work gloves, sunscreen, and refillable water bottles are also recommended. The Frogtown Clean-up will supply water for your bottles from a cooler, snacks, music and more. This event will be a great learning experience and fun for kids of all ages. There will be a limited number of free FoLAR 20th Anniversary River Clean-up tee shirts for volunteers and every volunteer will receive a free tote bag. There will also be a fundraising raffle for FoLAR.

FoLAR was founded on the belief that effective advocacy, education, collaboration and imagination can accomplish great things. We know firsthand that urban waterways restoration requires creativity, technical knowledge and tenacity - but also that our goals, while vast and visionary, are also undeniably attainable.

For press information on the Frogtown Cleanup Site please contact Susan von Seggern at susan@susanvonseggern.com or 213-840-0077. To volunteer please contact Paul Redmond on info@paul-redmond.com or 323.660.6366.

ALERT: HELP BRING LANDMARK STATUS FOR GRIFFITH PARK HOME

GRIFFITH PARK LANDMARK APPLICATION FACES FIRST CITY COUNCIL TEST: TUESDAY, JANUARY 13

In late October, before a standing room only crowd, the Cultural Heritage Commission voted to recommend landmark status for Griffith Park. The news was greeted with jubilance citywide.

But it's not over yet and next week the nomination enters the home stretch.

First stop is this Tuesday, January 13 at 2 p.m. , Room 350 City Hall, 200 N. Spring Street. The City Council's Planning & Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee will debate whether or not to send the matter to the full council for an up or down vote and, as we saw on October 30th, a strong public presence can affect the outcome.

Please be there, but if you cannot, you can definitely help influence PLUM members by e-mailing them your individual message of support for the designation (see addresses below). If you belong to an organization that supports the nomination, please include that, too and cc you communication to

councilmember.labonge@lacity.org

Your advocacy has and will continue to make a difference!

Historic Protection for Griffith Park?

Here's How You Can Help

Griffith Park's nomination for Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument status is gaining friends. The Federation of Canyon and Hillside Associations, an umbrella organization of 36 residential associations ranging from Glassell Park to Pacific Palisades has thrown its support behind the initiative. The Los Feliz Improvement Association, the city's oldest residential association and largest in the Griffith Park area, has voted unanimously to do the same. Starting next week, other community groups and associations including neighborhood councils, will consider endorsing the Griffith J. Griffith Family Trust's application. Saturday, June 14, 8:45 a.m.

WHAT: An ethnically diverse group of 2,000 volunteers unites to clean up the soft-bottomed Glendale Narrows section of the Los Angeles River. Southland community groups Heal the Bay, the Pacific American Volunteer Assn., the NAACP and Anahuak Soccer Assn. come together for a day of hands-on environmental stewardship and cross-cultural connection.

WHERE: Griffith Park Recreation Center, 3401 Riverside Drive, Los Angeles, CA   90027

WHEN:  Saturday, June 14, 8:45-11:30 a.m.

WHO:  Honorable Eric Garcetti, President, Los Angeles City Council, Dr. Mark Gold, President, Heal the Bay Tiger Kang, President, Pacific American Volunteers Assn., Dr. Geraldine Washington, President, Los Angeles Chapter of the NAACP, Raul Macias, President, Anahuak Soccer Assn.

Photo opportunities: A multicultural citizens’ army spreading out over miles of river to remove debris, Volunteers enjoying supplied Korean BBQ after clean up, Unique flora and fauna in little known soft-bottomed river section

City of Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument Application submitted for Griffith Park

LOS ANGELES, Calif., May 15 - The Griffith J. Griffith Charitable Trust, headed by great grandson Griffith Van Griffith, submitted a City of Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument Application (HCM) to designate Griffith Park a City of Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument (HCM). At 4,218 acres, Griffith Park is one of the largest city parks in the United States. In regards to acreage, the Griffith Park Los Angeles HCM nomination is believed to be the largest single resource local landmark application ever submitted to any United States municipality.  In December 1896, Colonel Griffith J. Griffith and his wife Tina deeded the land to the City of Los Angeles to be made available as a public park accessible to all. Colonel Griffith correctly predicted that someday a metropolis would encircle his donation, which he saw as vital to the future well being of the City and its people. As Griffith himself once said: ”Sunlight and air are the first requisites of sanity and health….public parks are a safety valve of great cities and should be made accessible and attractive, where neither race nor creed nor color should be excluded….give nature a chance to do her good work and nature will give every person a greater strength in health, strength and mental power.”

Aside from the wilderness area itself, within Griffith Park are numerous buildings, structures and objects including the Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood Sign, the Greek Theater, and numerous examples of “Park Style” retaining walls, culverts, and channels built through federal assistance programs in the 1930s.  Such resources and many others are recognized in this application as contributory to the historic significance of the Griffith Park itself.

The Griffith J. Griffith Charitable Trust selected architectural historians from the Los Angeles office of ICF Jones & Stokes to complete the HCM nomination.

Legion Lane “Nature Park”

April 30, 2008

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Friends of Atwater Village (“FAV”) has been working for years with L.A. City Council President Garcetti's office to try to get a park in Central or South Atwater Village. Recently the Council President met with Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy (“SMMC”) to revisit a underdeveloped lot on Legion Lane as a possible site for a park.

Currently the property has a newly built never occupied two story house on it and a new road that could lead to two other homes if the privately owned project continues. SMMC looked at this site about 10 years ago but received neighborhood opposition so they took their dollars elsewhere.  The climate of the neighborhood has changed and our hope is that we can gain the support of Atwater Village residents that we need to show SMMC that we will embrace the project.

Please join L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy this Saturday, May 3rd - 11:00am at 3781 Legion Lane (off of Sunnynook by the L.A. River) to discuss a potential park at this location and share your input and ideas for such a park.

If you cannot attend the meeting please email your thoughts to favboard@friendsofatwatervillage.org.

You can also see photos of the site at: www.flickr.com/photos/lopitos/sets/72157603828580400

TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND SMMC’S ROLE IN THIS PROPOSED PROJECT, PLEASE TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO VISIT SMMC WEBSITE  www.smmc.ca.gov read their mission statement then click on to visit your parks so you can see what type of parks they build.

As a community we need to be realistic and stay within the realm of what they do which are mostly passive recreation nature parks. We can not expect SMMC to take care of all the ill's of the river (graffiti, gangs, drugs, homelessness) only maintain and patrol what they build. The problems that currently exist will still exist whether there is a park or homes built.

FAV hopes that you can attend the meeting and also spread the word so there will be a good turnout of residents. This may be our last chance in Central Atwater Village for a park as it is the only open lot left. The owner of the property is a willing seller, SMMC is interested and CD13 is behind the project so most of the components are there. There is no guarantee that the project will materialize but it's certainly worth exploring.

Griffith Park Burn Area Wildlife Habitat Restoration Project

Griffith Park's Wildlife Need Your Help!

Please join in the effort to help Griffith Park recover from the fire.

Volunteers are needed for habitat restoration.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays this Spring, volunteers will be removing invasive plants that are quickly overgrowing the burn area. These invasive plants are competing with the native plants for light, water, and nutrients. The wildlife of Griffith Park need you to help the

native plants that provide their food, water, and shelter.

We will begin with a training about native and non-native plants in Griffith Park, so don't be late! If you have them, please bring your own gloves and/or pruners. A limited supply of gloves tools will be available (most work can be easily done by hand). Please make sure to wear long- sleeved shirts, long pants, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes.

You may also need sunglasses, sunblock, and a hat. For more information, or to arrange specific times, dates, parking, etc:

LA River Bridges Events

On January 30, 2008, 11 historic bridges over the Los Angeles River were designated as city Historic-Cultural Landmarks. While this ensures a role for the city's Cultural Heritage Commission in reviewing proposed widening and replacement projects, it does not prevent outright demolition. The fate of the bridges will remain a topic of debate for years to come.

To enlighten and educate in a fun, interactive way, the Los Angeles Conservancy, the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), and Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) have joined forces to celebrate these bridges with two special events in April as part of "Spanning History: The Bridges of the Los Angeles River."

Light Festival and CD4 Community Congress

January has come and gone and we are nearing the end of February. Although the DWP's lead event manager was reminded by two members of our community to schedule the promised January meeting at which we were to have assessed the success or failure of November's Light Festival pilot walking nights, it did not take place.

Our experiences in 2007 remind us how important it is that, instead of top-down solutions, the DWP work hand-in-hand with the public to make meaningful change. If our push for reform results in the event's conversion to a slo-mo bus ride or a longer bifurcated event, it will only pollute in a different way. There are indications that this might happen and will have to continue to work to ensure it does not.

For those who are able to attend, the meeting below presents an opportunity to register with DWP's top management that we want the 2008 Light Festival in Griffith Park be free of combustion engines and greenhouse gasses.

FRIENDS OF LA RIVER CELEBRATES TWO DECADES OF ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE

A freshman member of the California Assembly, an executive from Warner Brothers, the chairman of the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) and one of the region’s conservation pioneers will be among those honored this October by the civic group that put the Los Angeles River on the map over 20 years ago.

Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) will host its sixth annual River Awards and Fiesta on Friday evening, October 19, 2007 at the L.A. River Center just northeast of downtown Los Angeles.  The event is the group’s principal annual fundraiser; Councilmember Tom LaBonge will emcee the evening.

FoLAR is a non-profit organization founded by poet Lewis MacAdams in 1986 to protect and restore the natural and historic heritage of the Los Angeles River and its riparian habitat through inclusive planning, education and wise stewardship.  What began as a dream about what many considered a “concrete ditch” is now the linchpin in L.A.’s urban ecology and environmental justice movement.  Earlier this year, the City of Los Angeles adopted a Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan to guide urban planning along the River from downtown L.A. to the San Fernando Valley.  The plan incorporates many ideas long advocated by FoLAR.

FoLAR is honoring six individuals who have contributed to the River’s revitalization:

  • California Assemblymember Kevin de Leon, whose district includes major stretches of the River
  • Shelley Billik, Vice-President, Environmental Initiatives, Warner Bros. Entertainment
  • Tim Brick, Founder and Chair of the Arroyo Seco Foundation and chairman of the MWD
  • Joe Edmiston, executive officer of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Lane Barden, photographer and advocate
  • Rita Robinson, Director of the L.A. Bureau of Sanitation

Glassell Park Improvement Association (GPIA) Supports the Melanie Winter Fund

Perhaps your life is one of the many touched by Melanie Winter. She runs The River Project, a small non-profit organization, and for the past 11 years she has been tirelessly working with communities to re-imagine the Los Angeles River and realize a better future for our children.

For the past two years Melanie has been suffering with a progressively degenerating hip. She’s been getting around with the help of a cane and occasional injections of steroids, but the pain has become unbearable. She needs a hip replacement. Melanie has no health insurance and with this pre-existing condition, she can’t get any.

An account has been established that will accept funds, 100% of which will be paid directly to the hospital and the medical professionals who will be providing her care. You can send checks in any amount to the address below, payable to "Melanie Winter Medical Fund" or find more information at http://www.hip4mel.net These contributions are not tax-deductible.

Many of us have known someone in a similar situation as millions of Americans have no health insurance. We recognize the need to address this inequity and support a single-payer plan and universal health care system. Visit http://www.onecarenow.org to learn how we can all help realize a better health care future for everyone.

If you have any questions, email them to: help@hip4mel.org. Please send contributions to: Melanie Winter Medical Fund c/o 304 S. Broadway #498 LA, CA 90013 On Friday, July 20th, those who contribute will be invited to join us in a community celebration and picnic with live music and a raffle at Rio de Los Angeles State Park.

Atwater Village Fishing at the Los Angeles River

By Carmelo Gaeta

Some of you may have heard about the abundance fish in the LA RIVER, others of you are probably still in disbelief that not only are there fish down there but also people are fishing for them. I will admit I am one of those fishermen.

I was raised in Atwater Village and still have family and friends here. My aunt Flora lived within a block of the river on Tyburn, so it was only natural as a kid with an older brother and cousins to spend time in the river, looking for snakes, frogs, tadpoles, crawdads and anything else that would float down river.

The River was an open air science lab; you could see the cycle of life, to see a tadpole turn into a frog was an amazing thing as child. My connection to the river goes back 30yrs. So, one day last summer, after living a few years in New York, while I was walking my dog along the river just south of the Tyburn pole I came across two guys fishing, and to my surprise they had a fish in their bucket. My cousin David told me people were fishing in the River, but until I saw it for myself I didn't believe it. I felt it my duty as a native of Atwater having lived on Petite Ct, Madera, Perlita and now La Clede to fish the River myself, and boy have I, I'm hooked. I've fished from the Los Feliz Bridge to the 110 & 5 freeway interchange.

Griffith Park Fire - Message from L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti

Last night at John Marshall High School, I met with families who had been evacuated and helped them get situated. The evacuation center was very well organized. When I arrived, there were about thirty-five people there, although it could have easily run at capacity (200). Some had brought pets: dogs and cats, some fish in plastic bags and, reportedly, a chicken. I ran into my friend Chad, who lives in Los Feliz; he wasn't sure if he was going to stay or not.

Shortly after midnight, I went with Tom LaBonge up to the Griffith Observatory. Tom's passion for Los Angeles in general and for Griffith Park in particular is well known--he tended Dante's View for decades, long before holding office. I've marveled to hear the depth of his knowledge of the park as he communicates to reporters exactly where the fire has been and what damage he's done. We spoke to firefighters who were exhausted after 12-hour shifts, slumped at picnic tables a few dozen feet from still-visible flames.

Councilmember LaBonge isn't alone in his love for Griffith Park, but I think he represents for many Angelenos the deep and emotional connection that we feel towards spaces. This morning, shortly before touring the back roads of the park, I spoke to a woman who had walked up from the neighborhood to the south. "This was my park," she said, through tears.

Tom and I started from Vista del Valle and wove through the devastated moonscape. We saw logs still smoldering and pockets of green that had been successfully protected.

Griffith Park is not lost, of course, but it is damaged. We'll rebuild it, where we can, and it will grow back lush and green. It's the single largest urban park in the country; few other parks compare to it in its size and wildness.

For now, we take our hats off to the emergency responders, from Los Angeles and from our neighboring cities under mutual-aid pacts, who are continuing to successfully protect life and property. We wish them speedy containment of this fire.

L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti / CD13 has spearhead efforts to reduce the lawlessness and set a new standard for conduct by those who frequent the Los Angeles River. An ongoing “River Management & Maintenance Task Force” has been established to bring together various government entities (HBT, L.A. County Flood Control, LAPD, CHP, Gloria Molina’s Office, BSS, Caltrans, LAHSA, CCAC, DWP and the Army Core of Engineers) to discuss solutions and take steps to improve the L.A. River environment.

Current efforts are being focused on the section of the Los Angeles River between Fletcher Drive and Tyburn Street in Atwater Village.

For more information about this effort to improve Atwater’s section of the Los Angeles River please contact Mitch Ofarrell from CD13 at Mitch.Ofarrell@lacity.org

It has become a much-anticipated neighborhood happening, a springtime romp on an idyllic lakeside setting.  The Spring Festival at the Silver Lake Neighborhood Nursery School (NNS) is a kid-centric, earth-focused celebration that will feature sing-along entertainment, healthy food, games galore and a beautiful outside venue for time with family and friends.  Grown-ups will welcome the al fresco wine and beer bar, and everyone will enjoy the homemade food, free with the price of admission.

NNS is a parent-run cooperative, and this fundraising festival will also feature a Silent Auction and a quilt raffle, handmade by NNS families.

Musical groups will include:
The Hollow Trees –Folk music for families
Ellen and Matt –Music for kids, 0-adult
The Squeegees—Fun-filled, bubbly acoustic duo

NNS is a cooperative, owned and operated by the parents of its students since the 1960s.  Parents participate in the school's daily operations, administration and maintenance through regular work days as teaching assistants, committee work, fund-raising, and monthly business meetings.

NNS is child-centric, earth-focused and globally-conscious.  We reduce waste by recycling and composting, we avoid toxic chemicals and excess packaging, and we tend an onsite garden, fostering our children’s relationship with the natural environment. NNS families are committed to living lightly on our green acre.

5 Gateways into Elysian Park Juried Competition

Citizens Committee to Save Elysian Park Sponsors: 5 Gateways into Elysian Park Juried Competition

CCSEP is seeking proposals to design and construct five Gateways into Elysian Park that will create a cohesive identity for this historical park.

Up to five artists, architects or designers (in teams or individually) from the Greater Los Angeles area will be selected to submit final Design, Construction, and Installation Proposals to the selection committee.

Elysian Park, the oldest park in Los Angeles, contains the last remaining parcel of Pueblo lands that were included in the original Spanish land grant from King Carlos of Spain over two centuries ago.

Project Goals
Boldly define and enhance the five entrances to Elysian Park, several of which are highly visible and well-traveled.
Remain sensitive to existing and surrounding topography.
Provide a more cohesive awareness of the whole of Elysian Park through shared design elements.  (Not all gateways need to be alike.)
Each gateway design MUST contain the text Elysian Park and 1886.

WALNUT CANYON IN GLASSELL PARK NEEDS YOUR HELP!

This 30-acre canyon above Division St. and below Loveland Drive is largely undeveloped and home to native Black Walnut Trees.  Since February of  2003 the Glassell Park Improvement Association (GPIA) and the Friends of Walnut Canyon have been trying to put Walnut Canyon on the Santa Monica Convervancy's acquisition list...The SMMC is interested and has included Walnut Canyon on its wish list, but has yet to act.  The SMMC raises money and receives grants to purchase land from land owners at market rates in an effort to preserve  green space in Los Angeles for future generations to enjoy.

We need to get this done now...Local activist and GPIA member Andy Montealegre has contacted owners of lots in Walnut Canyon.  Some are willing to sell, some are willing to donate.  Andy has provided the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy with the information necessary for the board to contact the land owners.  It just takes a push by we, the people, to let the SMMC board, and our elected officials know how important this is to us, so that they can put some pressure on SMMC.
HERE IS WHERE YOU CAN HELP:

Help Save Griffith Park

Griffith Park is a natural refuge surrounded by an intense urban environment. It's characterized by extensive open space that connects people with the natural heritage of California, as well as the physical and cultural history of Los Angeles.

For more than 110 years, Griffith Park has existed as Los Angeles' great green, open space. Guidebooks rightly call the Park a "wilderness", "oasis," and "nature preserve" whose 4100 acres offer people an opportunity to recreate in a rustic environment. Griffith Park is the largest natural urban park in the Nation. Annually, Griffith Park offers more than 10 million visitors a wide choice of leisure pursuits. At the same time it functions as critical habitat for deer, bobcats, and other native animals and plants.

Despite the LA's runaway growth, the Park has managed to survive with many of its ecosystems intact. Until now...

CD13 Update from Atwater Village Field Deputy - Kabira Stokes Hochberg

An early morning in November hailed a moment of great change for LA River adjacent to Atwater Village.  On November 15th and 16th,  over 200 cubic yards of debris were hauled away from the River between Fletcher Drive and the Tyburn Waterpipe.  The Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) and city Lot Clearing division worked hand in hand to accomplish this.

There were 43 professionals involved on the morning of the clean up made up of: ACE, LAPD, County Social Services, County Mental Health Services, Social Security Administration, LAFD swift water rescue, LAHSA, LA lot clearing Division, City Housing Department, Park Rangers, and this Office. Of the 20 or so individuals who had been living in the River at any given time, 7 had not vacated in advance of the action date. Of those 7, 3 individuals accepted assistance, including the ability to keep their dogs with them! My thanks to the County of Los Angeles for making exceptions for emergency shelter availability.

All parties are determined to keep the islands free of encampments. The LAPD will monitor daily and has stepped up, and gone above and beyond - as have all agencies involved in this effort.

A big congratulations also, to FAV, for the successful installment of the Acresite Gate, designed by the talented Brett Goldstone - whose art is visible more and more around Atwater Village.

All in all, the River is looking great as we round out 2006. With your help, 2007 will only bring more improvements (and hopefully more River Walks!).

Happy Holidays to all. Together we will make 2007 a great one.

L.A. River Action Update from CD13

Wednesday and Thursday of this week (11/17/2006) over 200 cubic yards of debris was hauled away from the River between Fletcher Drive and the Tyburn Water pipe. The Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) and L.A. city Lot Clearing division worked hand in hand to accomplish this. The waste was unbelievable and only validates for me, the fact this was the right thing to do.

There were 43 professionals involved Wednesday morning made up of: ACE, LAPD, County Social Services, County Mental Health Services, Social Security Administration, LAFD swift water rescue, LAHSA, LA lot clearing Division, City Housing Department, Park Rangers, and this Office. Of the 20 or so individuals who live in the River there at any given time, 7 had not vacated in advance of the action date. Of those 7, 3 individuals accepted assistance, including the ability to keep their dogs with them!

We thank the Los AngelesCounty for making exceptions for emergency shelter availability. A few people balked and stayed behind.

All parties are determined to keep the islands free of encampments. The LAPD will monitor this daily and has stepped up, and gone above and beyond as have all agencies involved in this effort have.

A few of our next steps :

  • LAPD and Park Rangers will prevent future encampments.
  • Our Office, Housing, County, and LAHSA will convene next week to discuss interim housing for those in emergency shelter.
  • LAHSA to continue outreach along the River.
  • River Management and Maintenance Task force will meet again in January and continue progressing on this and other issues.

A deep, heartfelt thank you was expressed to everyone involved.

Dear Community Member:

We're half way through the 18-month planning process to revitalize the LA River! After three sets of workshops, the project team has listened to the community, completed their research, and narrowed down potential opportunity sites along the River. The team is now ready to report back

Please join us at the next set of workshops for a discussion of the 5 sites which could eventually be recommended in the master plan. We want to hear your input on the best mix of land uses and River-related activities such as enhancing water quality, creating natural habitats and recreation spaces and providing economic development opportunities.

The workshops are as follows:

Greater Los Angeles Area

Saturday, June 24, 2006, 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Goodwill Workforce Center, 342 N. San Fernando Rd., Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles City Council has selected a dramatic new mural from Friends of Atwater Village titled “Revisit the Red Car” for an L.A. River Day Award, to be presented Friday, June 9, 2006 at City Hall.  The mural depicts Los Angeles’ historic Pacific Electric Red Car in a dramatic 30-foot rendition as it crosses the river into one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, Atwater Village.  The city award describes the project as “a vibrant mural that celebrates the Red Car and perhaps creates a source of hope for our neighborhood, the river and the cause of mass transit in Los Angeles.”

“Great things happen when you mix artists with community activists and city resources,” said Cesar Portillo of Friends of Atwater Village.  “The mural is helping to re-establish the river as a destination point in our community, which is what we hoped it would do.”

Los Angeles City Councilman Eric Garcetti (www.cd13.com) officiated at the mural dedication earlier this year with over 100 local elementary school students in attendance, saying “We welcome the Red Car back to Atwater Village today not just as a depiction of our past, but also as a reflection of renewed commitment to our city’s youth.  This mural helps us reclaim the Los Angeles River by creating an attractive neighborhood destination in what was once a graffiti-blighted and forbidding corner.  And it helps us imagine again a city with mass transit that serves all our neighborhoods.”

Los Angeles, CA - Friends of Atwater Village (FAV) has been awarded a Los Angeles City Community Beautification grant to upgrade a dilapidated fence and access gate to the Los Angeles River.

"We are delighted that the city of Los Angeles continues its support of our neighborhood improvement efforts," said FAV board president Cesar Portillo.  "What is now a chain link eyesore will soon be a decorative gate that not only beautifies our community, but will also help reconnect our neighborhood to the Los Angeles River."  Dozens of neighbors signed petitions in support of the upgrade and have pledged volunteer hours to the project.  "We will work with local artists to develop a final concept for the gate, which we are calling 'Acresite Water Willow Gate'," said Portillo.

The river bank between Fletcher Drive and Glendale Boulevard has been a focus of recent enhancements designed to reconnect the neighborhood to the river.  The bank features one of the few soft-bottom stretches of the river, and is home to blue heron, egrets and other water fowl.

Evidence of Things Past

It's always amazing when I discover a bit of historical Los Angeles that's been sitting beneath my nose. It happened again while I was visiting my father in Atwater, whose apartment is located alongside the Los Angeles River.

The image of the Los Angeles river is commonly one of concrete and graffiti. In the eyes of most of us living in Los Angeles, the river is more a joke rather than the powerful force of nature that often flooded large parts of Los Angeles until the mid-part of the last century. It's power only coming to the fore when the inevitable news is broadcast that someone has been caught in the rush of water caused by a severe storm. It is then that the river reminds everyone that it is truly a force of nature ...

But Saturday, the water traveled leisurely amongst the rocks and the plant life that only occur on this particular stretch of river. Here the bottom of the river is not sealed with concrete. Here there is depth to the river and as a result evidence of growth and life.

My father and I have spent a lot of time here. I have photographed him here several times before. Today, there was a new addition to the backdrop, a mural. It was a painting of a Pacific Electric Red Car, part of an extensive system that had once served numerous areas of Los Angeles. It is while we were sitting here talking that a man approached with a small digital camera in his hand.

His name is Bob Wildman and he is a member of the Friends of Atwater Village. They were responsible for the mural, which was painted on the concrete supports that had once held up the weight of the rails and the cars as they traveled back and forth between Downtown and Glendale. Though I had known about the Red Car route that went down Broadway and Hollywood Blvds, I hadn't known about the route that passed through Atwater. I had never thought much about these stands of concrete, though they seemed strangely out of place, serving no obvious purpose. But like so many things, I never thought to look into what purpose they had or did serve.

As Bob told us about the groups efforts in the community, I imagined the red car rumbling over the tracks. With traffic in Los Angeles become increasingly worse, it was sad to think of the demise of a public transportation system that had once been one of the most extensive one's in the country. With the rise of the automobile, the rail cars days were numbered. What need would there be with such a system when "everyone" was going to own a car?

Fifty years later, we see the result, a city struggling to move its populace if not with improved efficiency at least with reduced anxiety and frustration. Suffice it to say that things are less than successful.

Looking at the mural, which is located just below the Hyperion Bridge, I see many things. I see a community reclaiming a piece of a city and a bit of it's history. I see a glimpse of what moving through this city was and should be. I also see a little stretch of river that means many things to many people.

Saturday, I got to claim just a lit bit more of Los Angeles for myself.

Atwater Village Hidden Treasures: Fletcher Drive Bridge Pocket Parks

Fletcher Drive Bridge, Atwater Village CA

Rattlesnake Pocket Park

On April 23, 1999 Mayor Riordan and other officials dedicated the Great Heron Gate at the west end of the historic Fletcher Drive Bridge built in 1927. The artist Brett Goldstone was commissioned by the Friends of the Los Angeles River to design the gate. Sculpted in steel the gate depicts the ecosystems of the river from the mountains through downtown.

The gate is the access to a small park named Rattlesnake Park (see pictures below), after the family of snakes that had to be removed in order to complete the work. The stone work was created by Rick Reid a stonemason who has worked in Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley and Ventura since 1978. In 1995 Rick began working with
North East Trees designing stone work for their pocket parks along the Los Angeles River.

Water with Rock Gate Pocket Park

Water with Rocks was planted by North East Trees (NET) in 2001 with 50 initial trees, mostly the smaller, slow growing Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia) and Elderberry (Sambucus mexicanus) since the site is entirely under the electrical transmission towers and lines.

The site is controlled by Department of Water and Power which, due to their concerns with the future stability of the hill and their fence foundations, removed NET’s  plantings from the strip adjacent to their fence to build a new rock wall to help shore up this edge.  NET has been working with the Department of Water and Power -- with the super support and help of
Council District 13 -- to replaced these plantings in Spring 2005 once irrigation improvements were completed.

Los Angeles’ “Red Car” Reborn in L.A. River Mural

Revisit the Red Car Mural

Atwater Village, CA – Over 50 years after its demise, Los Angeles’ historic Pacific Electric Red Car once again crosses the Los Angeles River in a dramatic 30 foot high mural depicting its passage into one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, Atwater Village.

Los Angeles City Councilman Eric Garcetti officiated at the mural dedication with over 100 local elementary school students in attendance, saying “We welcome the Red Car back to Atwater Village today not just as a depiction of our past, but also as a renewed commitment to our city’s youth.  This mural not only helps us reclaim the Los Angeles River, not only creates an attractive neighborhood destination that was once graffiti-blighted and forbidding,” said Garcetti, “but it also helps us imagine again a city with mass transit that serves all our neighborhoods.”

The mural and its adjoining pocket park are part of ongoing efforts by local activists – the Friends of Atwater Village – to re-link their neighborhood with the L.A. River.  “In the 1950’s, the Pacific Electric Red Car’s Glendale/Burbank line ceased operating between downtown Los Angeles and Glendale,” said FAV board president Cesar Portillo  “Six concrete pillars that supported the car’s passage over the Los Angeles River are all that remain, and passersby since then have wondered what purpose the massive pillars once served.  We hope this beautiful mural on one of those pillars will bring out fans of the river, fans of the Red Car, and simultaneously connect us with L.A.’s past and a better future,” said Portillo.

The mural was created in October by artist lead Rafael Escamilla, together with contributing artists Tom Hinds & Roxanne Salazar.  The 30 foot by 40 foot mural was commissioned by Friends of Atwater Village (FAV) and funded with City of Los Angeles’ Board of Public Works Community Beautification Grant, as well as private donations raised in September 2004 at the LA River Center.

In July, Garcetti and FAV  announced "Red Car River Park" at this site with official installation of signage designating existing green space abutting the river where the historic Pacific Electric Railway once entered Atwater Village.

In recent years, long time residents who remember playing on the river’s banks and taking the Red Car into downtown have worked diligently to reconnect Atwater Village to the River. Sandra Caravella, who grew up in the neighborhood and whose family once owned a local corner grocery market, said "Our community of Atwater Village has lived by the river since the 1920s, but since then we've slowly walled ourselves off from this great open space," said "Red Car River Park and this mural create an important gateway and hopefully inspire more neighbors to reconnect to the river”.

Ann Lawson of FAV also remembers riding the Red Car across the river. “We can’t abandon our youth,” said Lawson, who is working closely with Mitch O’Farrell of Garcetti’s office to keep the are free of graffiti.  “We are winning the battle.  We kept fighting the graffiti and we kept reaching out to these kids, and now two of the main taggers are in a job training program.”

In September of last year, FAV hosted a fundraiser as its first effort to support Red Car River Park, thanks in large part to the efforts of local restauranteur and activist Netty Carr, who said “for almost two years now, we’ve raised grant money and private money, consulted Red Car historians, secured county permits, and worked closely with a great team of artists.  It’s a delight to see our vision become a reality.”

The project was funded in large part through the Los Angeles City Neighborhood Matching Fund Program.  FAV's overall goal is to increase safety and access for residents seeking recreation and a connection to the river.  The effort builds on a small pocket park installed by Northeast Trees on the Southeast side of the Hyperion Bridge at the LA River.

Atwater is fortunate to have the soft-bottom section of the LA River - one of the most beautiful stretches of the river - as one of the community's borders.  This portion of the river supports a wide variety of plants and bird-life, including one of the region's largest native birds, the blue heron.

Project sponsors plan to reclaim more of the existing space with installation of walkways and planting more native plants.  "We hope to make the site safer and more accessible for local residents seeking recreation and re-connection to the river," said Luis Lopez of FAV.  "Existing hardscape includes a bike rack, river- rock seating areas, which will be cleaned of graffiti. The end result will be a more visually inviting and accessible park."
