The Atwater Village Neighborhood Council (AVNC) has amended its bylaws to help curtail widespread absenteeism among elected Board members. Changes to the bylaws would allow the Board to remove any member for failing to attend five (5) regularly scheduled meetings within a “council year”.
Since January 2009 the AVNC Board has twice been unable to garner the quorum needed to take action by vote on issues before the Board.
Board members that have failed to attend most of the five (5) regularly scheduled meetings this year include Fernando Dejo-Grundy (absent 5 times), Lance Sandman (absent 4 times), Amador Solis (absent 3 times) and Lenore Solis (absent 3 times). This does not included the number of meeting missed by these board members since the Board was installed in October 2008.
The AVNC Board meets only once a month, on the 2nd Thursday of each month. The meetings are held locally at Christ’s Church in Central Atwater Village from 7pm to 9pm.
The new Bylaws are intended to curb absenteeism. The Bylaw changes facilitate the process by which the board can remove those members who miss five meetings within the “council year” and allow for their replacement.

MUSEUMS OF THE ARROYO CELEBRATE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF “MOTA DAY” BY TRAVELING BACK IN TIME TO THE 1920s
Six museums in Los Angeles and Pasadena located along the Arroyo Seco will open free to the public
Sunday, May 17; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Participating museums: Heritage Square Museum, The Gamble House, Los Angeles Police Historical Society Museum, the Lummis Home and Garden, the Pasadena Museum of History and the Autry National Center’s Southwest Museum of the American Indian
Calendar summary follows release
PASADENA, Calif. Longtime devotees of the daylong event where six museums located along the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena open free to the public call it “MOTA Day.” But those who have yet to discover this opportunity to travel back in time to experience life in early Los Angeles through its art, architecture and history may appreciate a little more explanation.“MOTA Day stands for Museums of the Arroyo Day,” explains Kori Capaldi, program and operations manager at the Gamble House in Pasadena, which is internationally recognized as the most complete and best-preserved work of American Arts and Crafts architects Charles and Henry Greene. “And, this year, our MOTA Day participants are excited to be celebrating our 20th anniversary.”
Museums joining the Gamble House at this year’s event on Sunday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., include Heritage Square Museum, the Los Angeles Police Historical Society Museum, the Lummis Home and Garden, the Pasadena Museum of History, and the Autry National Center’s Southwest Museum of the American Indian. Most will also present exhibitions that pay tribute, in some form or fashion, to the event’s milestone anniversary.
“For example, at the Gamble House, visitors will see cars from the 1920s,” says Capaldi. “We’ll also have children’s crafts and refreshments on site. But, of course, the highlight of a visit to every museum participating in MOTA Day is a tour of the facility itself. There’s a lot to see and even more to learn!”
Ample parking is available at each museum, as well as continuous shuttle service between sites, for those who don’t wish to drive from venue to venue. However, as MOTA Day ends promptly at 4 p.m., when making plans to visit, please remember that shuttles will stop running shortly after 4 p.m. as well.
“The writer Pearl Buck wrote, ‘If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday,’ ” says Diane Siegel, Manager of Programming and Curriculum Development at the Pasadena Museum of History. “I can’t think of a better place for all of us to start our journey than with MOTA Day.”
For more information on the 20th Annual MOTA Day, visit www.museumsofthearroyo.com or call the hotline number at 213.740.TOUR (8687). Programs may be subject to change.
SPECIAL EVENTS AT MUSEUMS OF THE ARROYO DAY:The Gamble House:
Although car enthusiasts will enjoy seeing the collection of 1920s-era cars on site at The Gamble House, the star attraction for MOTA Day visitors will undoubtedly be the house itself. Designed in 1908 by architects Greene & Greene, the Gamble House was commissioned by David and Mary Gamble, of Cincinnati, Ohio, as a retirement residence. David and Mary lived in the house until their deaths in 1923 and 1929, respectively. Their son, Cecil Huggins Gamble, and his wife, Louise Gibbs Gamble, lived in the house beginning in 1946 and briefly considered selling it. They soon changed their minds, however, when prospective buyers spoke of painting the interior teak and mahogany woodwork white! The Gambles realized the artistic importance of the house and it remained in the Gamble family until 1966, when it was deeded to the city of Pasadena in a joint agreement with the University of Southern California School of Architecture.
Cookies, lemonade and smoothies from Jamba Juice will be available on the lawn as well as craft projects for children. The Gamble House is located at 4 Westmoreland Place in Pasadena.
Heritage Square:
Heritage Square, a “living history museum” of 8 historic structures reflecting the settlement and development of Southern California from the Civil War to the early 20th Century, will present “Lost to Progress” – a look at the balance between preservation and progress, as illustrated by how the three historical neighborhoods of Chavez Ravine, Chinatown and Bunker Hill were destroyed so that Los Angeles could develop into a modern, world class city – as part of its MOTA Day programming. Visitors are encouraged not to miss The Longfellow-Hastings Octagon Veranda, one of three buildings of this type of rare architecture in the state of California. Costumed docents will be available at each building to answer questions.
“Heritage Square takes its guests back in time to an era where electricity was a novelty, a trip to the beach was often a full-weekend activity and manners were distinctly different from those of today,” says Jessica Maria Alicea-Covarrubias, Director of Museum Administration and Operations. Heritage Square is located at 3800 Homer Street in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Police Historical Society Museum:
The Los Angeles Police Historical Society Museum, which chronicles the history of the LAPD from 1869 to the present, is located in the former Renaissance Revival style Highland Park Police Station, at 6045 York Boulevard in Los Angeles.
“The station was built in 1925, which fits perfectly into our 1920s theme, ” says Executive Director Glynn Martin. “After it closed in 1983, it suffered from vandals, arson fires and water damage. But, since then, the station has been salvaged and restored by the Historical Society and is now a registered National Historic landmark.”
MOTA Day visitors can tour the facilities, which feature private collections and historical memorabilia dating back to the late 19th century. Children will have a chance to climb into a retired police helicopter and try on police gear. Many guests also enjoy using their own cameras to create a “Booking Photo” of their favorite “crook” in the historic jail.
Autry National Center’s Southwest Museum of the American Indian:Visitors can enjoy Native American performers and tour the ethnobotanical garden, as well as learn about the museum’s recent major repair projects. Video presentations will be shown in the Braun Research Library.
The museum is located at 234 Museum Drive in Los Angeles.Lummis Home and Garden:
The turn-of-the century home of the founder of the Southwest Museum of the American Indian, Charles Fletcher Lummis, is part of the MOTA Day tour as well. Lummis – an early activist, author, anthropologist, photographer, and civic booster who encouraged and nurtured some of the West’s finest poets, writers and artists – was also the first city editor of the fledgling Los Angeles Times. Tours of the Lummis Home, built over a 12-year period with stones from the arroyo, will be available throughout MOTA Day as well as self-guided garden tours.
In addition to touring the house and water-wise demonstration garden, MOTA Day visitors are invited to hear folksingers, Gigi and Mike, entertain children and adults with turn of the century folk songs and sing-alongs from 11 am to 12 pm. At one and three pm. historian Daniel Lewis will present “Charles F. Lummis in Chautauqua,” a historical characterization of the home’s creator
In the El Alisal garden, the Arroyo Arts Collective will present a multimedia display, “Bringing the Past to Light: New Art from Old Images” featuring an innovative mix of past, present and future visions of the Arroyo area. The Lummis Home and Garden is located at 200 Avenue 43 in Los Angeles.
Pasadena Museum of History:
The Pasadena Museum of History –located on the grounds of the Fenyes Mansion, an elegant 1905 Beaux Arts style building that is one of the few remaining grand homes on Pasadena's former "Millionaire's Row" – will celebrate MOTA Day’s 20th Anniversary by placing special emphasis on telling stories from the 1920s. “Family Stories: Sharing a Community’s Legacy” will chronicle the lives of six different families representing the largest population groups in early Pasadena. All had settled in Pasadena by the 1920s.
Several times throughout the day, visitors will hear “Travels with Babsie,” a dramatic monologue near a 1920s Model T car, which will chronicle Pasadena resident Leonora Curtin’s adventures by car throughout the Southwest. The monologue is based on postcards Leonora Curtin sent her grandmother throughout the 1920s.
In addition, “newboys” carrying news bags filled with stories culled from archival 1920s newspapers stroll throughout the campus. A guest artist will also lead children in making paper dolls in the style popular with children of the 1920s and teach them about 20 famous people who have lived, worked, or studied in the Pasadena area. The museum is located at 470 West Walnut Street in Pasadena.
Calendar Summary:Museums of the Arroyo/MOTA Day
Sunday, May 17 -10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Participating Museums open free to the public:
The Frogtown clean-up will take place in the Blake Lofts parking lot adjacent to a portion of the river's natural bottom in the heart of Elysian Valley. All neighbors, the Frogtown Arts Collective and green minded businesses are invited to make the cleanup, both rewarding and informative.
The Green Committee from the Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce will be on site informing the public on green issues, along with their giant plastic bag ball. Local environmental arts collective Grenememe along with photographer Paul Redmond will collaborate on “Trashy Art” a map and storytelling project around the clean-up, on a 12 foot graphic of the river from Fletcher to Riverside. Along with clean-up volunteers, they will document weird and not so wonderful trash through physical collection, photography and narrative. Redmond will set up the Frogtown Fotobooth on site, documenting the event through portraits of volunteers and their "river finds". At the end of the day Greenmeme will take the mural and translate it into a graphic illustration. The “Trashy Art” project will be shown at the next Frogrown Artwalk, other local events and online.
Participants are encouraged to wear clothes they can get dirty and sturdy shoes. Work gloves, sunscreen, and refillable water bottles are also recommended. The Frogtown Clean-up will supply water for your bottles from a cooler, snacks, music and more. This event will be a great learning experience and fun for kids of all ages. There will be a limited number of free FoLAR 20th Anniversary River Clean-up tee shirts for volunteers and every volunteer will receive a free tote bag. There will also be a fundraising raffle for FoLAR.FoLAR was founded on the belief that effective advocacy, education, collaboration and imagination can accomplish great things. We know firsthand that urban waterways restoration requires creativity, technical knowledge and tenacity - but also that our goals, while vast and visionary, are also undeniably attainable.

A new medical marijuana dispensary at 3106 Glendale Blvd intends to open in apparent violation of a city wide moratorium on new marijuana dispensaries.
The L.A. City Council adopted a Medical Marijuana Dispensary Interim Control Ordinance (ICO) in September 2007 and that moratorium is still in effect. Under this moratorium existing dispensaries are prohibited from changing locations without applying for and being granted a “hardship exemption”.
According to the City Clerk office the new marijuana dispensary at 3106 Glendale Blvdhas not applied for a hardship exemption.

A little bit about The Garden?
In September 2000, a small group of dedicated parents sought to create a safe, affordable, and socially progressive nursery school for their children. Through the tireless efforts of these founding parents, coupled with help from a generous benefactor, our permanent school site was secured and has transformed over the past 8 years into a thriving place for families to grow and learn together. The Garden also became the first new co-op nursery school in Los Angeles to emerge in over 25 years.
Located in Glassell Park, The Garden serves children from all economic and ethnic backgrounds in North East Los Angeles. We respect our children's individual needs while guiding them on their way to meaningful and respectful interactions with peers and community.
Thank you so much for your support!

As many of you know we have had a canned food drive for the past month. I personally was hoping to gather 2000 food items. Well, once again, the kindness of others has surpassed all of my expectations. The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank picked up our haul today. Wow, 3,852 food items, weighing 2,763 pounds. Over a ton of food!!!
I would like to give a shout out to some super angels:
Iris Acosta Lopez, made the kick off party a success by donating 1,000 cans of food.
Mathalyn Cox, my mother in law, (Fresno) 100 cans.
Arturo and Julie Martinez, 200 cans.
Mindy and her mom Melodie came in, week after week, with more stuff.
Norm and Leona Barker donated bags of cans before I even printed the flyers.
Romi Rios made a special Costco run just for us.
Barbara Lass, I guess cans were not enough, she threw in a check. Thank you.
Betty Barlotta, my tart tongued storyteller. Thanks again.
Soni Fields, who never says no.
My great friends from Silverlake, over 750 cans of food.
Echo Park, I love you, over 500 cans of food
Atwater Village, over 200 cans of food. Thank you my dear neighbors.
Gordon, Paul de Marco, John Garbin, Pat & Rebecca, Maryanne St Jude, Tish Cyrus, Laura Rudy, Thea, Barbara Katsoff, Mark De La Madrid, Robin and all the folks at Consolidated Seed, Jan the X and my Uncle Arturo, Bunny , Jack, Karen Ray, and Luis Lopez, my Atwater Village PR dude.
So many friends that I just can’t list, but I hope they know how grateful I am.
On a personal note, I don’t know what my life would be like without my wife Patti: I come up with these hair brained ideas and she always says, “ I’m sure you can do that and more.”
My mom, who always encourages my good behavior and ignores all my faults.
My dearest friend Arpy,. who is always first in line to say, “count me in;” and who navigates the Internet much better than I.
My cousin Julie, who is living proof that angels live amongst us.
Once again thank you all. We did a great thing in 2008, and I am sure I will annoy you again some how, some way, in 2009. But I promise it will be for a good cause.

ARTWATER is a music and arts festival creating awareness for the merchants and citizens of Atwater Village by presenting a day of fun for our neighborhood as well as creating an outreach opportunity to the city at large. Musical and dance performances will showcase the local dance studios and musicians of Atwater Village. In addition there will be booths available for rent for local artists to sell their art and hand crafted merchandise. There will also be interactive creative booths for children and adults as well as food and beverage vendors. All funds raised over and above production costs will be donated to Sonic Muze whose mission is to provide our local schools with art and musical supplies.
The organizers of ARTWATER are hoping that this event will bring together all of the various hard working community organizations, merchants, schools and our creative, diverse resident population in celebrating what little Atwater Village has to offer this big city. In that spirit ARTWATER is seeking submissions from bands, artists and those with ideas on creative interactive activities as well as volunteers to help pull it all together in grand style.
Bands can submit a brief bio and a music sample via MP3, web site or My Space page to danica212@aol.com or drop off a bio and CD to Importante at 3149 Glendale Blvd., 90039. Deadlines for band submissions is Febuary 15th, 2009.
Artists who want to apply for a booth can request an application at danica212@aol.com .
All volunteers in whatever capacity will be welcome but specific needs are a web designer, a graphic artist for flyer design, someone to head a band committee and most importantly a fundraising crew. Address all inquires to danica212@aol.com or stop in at Importante to chat about the possibilities for involvement.
A general ARTWATER meeting will be called in January to entertain all suggestions and offers from all parties who would like to help make this event a memorable one.

Dear Friends and Neighbors of the Vibrant Village,
In just 24-hours hundreds of people will be descending upon Atwater Village to witness the 17th Annual Atwater Village Tree Lighting.
As you know, this happy and glorious event will take place tomorrow/Thursday night in the Wells Fargo Parking lot located at 3250 Glendale Blvd. and will begin promptly at 6:30PM.
This is the time for our Village to shine. This is what it’s all about. Sharing the Joy of the Season with our fellow business owners and residents and letting the entire City of Los Angeles know why we all love to call Atwater Village our home. Yes, there have been LOTS of press inquiries as well, so the spotlight of Los Angeles will surely be on us tomorrow night.
We will be encouraging all of the night’s attendees to shop Atwater Village after The Event has concluded, so we hope Atwater Village merchants on planning on staying open a bit later to welcome these guests and their potential sales purchases.
On behalf of this year’s Vibrant Village Board of Directors of the Atwater Griffith Park Chamber of Commerce, it has been my honor to represent such a wonderfully diverse group of people in this Village of Villages.
We look forward to a night to remember for the ages. See you tomorrow night!

On behalf of the Vibrant Village Board of Directors of the Atwater Griffith Park Chamber of Commerce, it gives me great pleasure to announce this year’s 17th Annual Atwater Village Tree Lighting Ceremony.
Set to take place on Thursday, December 4, at 6:30PM, this happy and joyous event will once again be held in the parking lot of Wells Fargo Bank located at 3250 Glendale Blvd.
Over 600 people attended last year’s event, and we look forward to an even bigger turnout this year for a program that promises to be more exciting and dazzling than ever.
Our plans for this years wonderfully unique night include featuring children’s choirs from our various local schools, “Voices of Christmas” choral singers, a potential “surprise” appearance by a Atwater Village-based World famous singer, and of course Santa Claus himself, arriving via the Los Angeles Fire Department. In addition to our local talent, representatives of the Los Angeles City Council: Council President Eric Garcetti who proclaimed last year’s event as the “largest tree lighting event” that he had seen in Los Angeles, Councilmember Tom LeBonge, and other political figures will be in attendance.
In preparation for the many visitors our Village anticipates for The Lighting, a Chamber mixer “Pep Rally” will be held on the back patio of Kaldi Coffee next Tuesday night, November 18, at 7PM. Come meet the new Vibrant Village Board of Directors, the Tree Lighting Committee, and get a sneak preview at some of the new decorations that will be added to last year’s collection of glittery and sparkly ornaments.
As we are in the process of gathering sponsorships to help pay for the added elements to this year’s Event, please bring your checkbooks too and we’ll have the sponsorship forms ready for you.
We all know it takes a Village to make it happen, and you are the Friends and Neighbors to create the magic.
For more information regarding The Lighting and/or next week’s Pep Rally, please feel free to contact the Chamber at (323) 634-2535. Also, we would greatly appreciate your rsvp by next Monday, November 17, as food and beverages will be served.
We look forward to seeing your smiling faces soon.
Sincerely,
Mark Newman-Kuzel

Many gardeners are hesitant to include California native plants in their landscapes even though they’re ecologically appropriate, water conserving, low maintenance and wildlife attracting. In his presentation, Greg Rubin will dispel many popular misconceptions about California natives while revealing how to succeed with them. He’ll also discuss designing by plant community and zoning to bring year-round beauty and a sense of place to your California garden.
Greg Rubin was a successful aerospace engineer when his fascination with California native plants redirected his life. This fascination, begun in 1985 while renovating his parent’s garden in Chatsworth, soon grew into a thriving new business. His firm, California’s Own Native Landscape Design, has been responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of over 500 native landscapes in San Diego County. With a primary emphasis on residential and institutional clients, they’ve also been involved in a number of native restoration projects.
Greg Rubin is a passionate advocate for California native plant communities. His work has been featured in newspapers and magazines including the Los Angeles Times, Union Tribune, Sunset, Pacific Horticulture, Kiplinger’s and California Gardener. He has been a frequent guest on radio and television programs and regularly speaks on native plants to groups throughout Southern California.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Friends of Atwater Village (“FAV”) has been working for years with L.A. City Council President Garcetti's office to try to get a park in Central or South Atwater Village. Recently the Council President met with Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy (“SMMC”) to revisit a underdeveloped lot on Legion Lane as a possible site for a park.
Currently the property has a newly built never occupied two story house on it and a new road that could lead to two other homes if the privately owned project continues. SMMC looked at this site about 10 years ago but received neighborhood opposition so they took their dollars elsewhere. The climate of the neighborhood has changed and our hope is that we can gain the support of Atwater Village residents that we need to show SMMC that we will embrace the project.
Please join L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy this Saturday, May 3rd - 11:00am at 3781 Legion Lane (off of Sunnynook by the L.A. River) to discuss a potential park at this location and share your input and ideas for such a park.
If you cannot attend the meeting please email your thoughts to favboard@friendsofatwatervillage.org.
You can also see photos of the site at: www.flickr.com/photos/lopitos/sets/72157603828580400
TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND SMMC’S ROLE IN THIS PROPOSED PROJECT, PLEASE TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO VISIT SMMC WEBSITE www.smmc.ca.gov read their mission statement then click on to visit your parks so you can see what type of parks they build.
As a community we need to be realistic and stay within the realm of what they do which are mostly passive recreation nature parks. We can not expect SMMC to take care of all the ill's of the river (graffiti, gangs, drugs, homelessness) only maintain and patrol what they build. The problems that currently exist will still exist whether there is a park or homes built.
FAV hopes that you can attend the meeting and also spread the word so there will be a good turnout of residents. This may be our last chance in Central Atwater Village for a park as it is the only open lot left. The owner of the property is a willing seller, SMMC is interested and CD13 is behind the project so most of the components are there. There is no guarantee that the project will materialize but it's certainly worth exploring.

A separate new "Family Stage" will be featured at the Lummis Day Festival this year to add top kid-friendly puppet theater, storytelling and music to the kaleidoscope of music, dance and art that will fill Sycamore Grove Park from 12:30-7:00pm on Sunday, June 1.
The Puppets and Players Little Theater and the We Tell Stories performing group will be featured on the new stage. Other performers will be announced soon. MC's for the Family Stage will include KPFK's Fidel Rodriguez and personalities from KMEX, Univision 34.
We Tell Stories is a multi-ethnic community of artists who educate and nurture young audiences by reconnecting them with the ancient powers and wisdom of storytelling and theater. Performances by the We Tell Stories group blend storytelling and audience-participatory theater to bring world folklore, fairy tales, literature, legends, and mythology to life.
Puppets and Players Little Theatre creatively re-invents the ancient art of marionette theater with masterful marionettes, colorful stage sets, exquisite lighting and state of the art sound that all combine to leave a lasting impression of puppetry at its best. Their performances, which combine classical marionettes, hand puppets and live performers, are presented on a beautifully crafted European-style marionette theater-on-wheels.
The third annual Lummis Day: The Festival of Northeast Los Angeles, will be presented by the Annenberg Foundation and the Autry National Center and will celebrate the diverse cultures and history of the L.A.’s Arroyo neighborhoods with June 1 events--free and open to the public--at Lummis Home and Sycamore Grove Park. Performers--all with roots in Northeast Los Angeles--will include nationally and regionally celebrated artists performing in Spanish, English and Tagalog.
Information on the Festival and its programs is available at www.LummisDay.org

native plants that provide their food, water, and shelter.
We will begin with a training about native and non-native plants in Griffith Park, so don't be late! If you have them, please bring your own gloves and/or pruners. A limited supply of gloves tools will be available (most work can be easily done by hand). Please make sure to wear long- sleeved shirts, long pants, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes.
You may also need sunglasses, sunblock, and a hat. For more information, or to arrange specific times, dates, parking, etc:

The Mayor’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2008-09 calls for a cut of $5.19 million dollars from the Los Angeles Public Library system budget – a 22% cut from last year’s budget. The cuts will affect the budget for new books, staffing and hours of operation. Our libraries serve all age groups, ethnic groups and special interest groups in our respective communities. The Los Angeles Public Library and Friends of Atwater Library are asking for your help in preserving the much needed monies for the library system. We are asking that you, members of your family, friends and neighbors send a letter to the Mayor and the City Council (click here for sample letter / email, pdf file) restoring the 2007-08 budget so the libraries can continue to buy books, maintain staff and hours.

Hello community members,
At some point, we all received our first chance at employment with that one business willing to take a risk on someone with little work experience. Although most of us have outgrown our first, second, or third jobs, there are many local employment age youth who have not found their first job yet.
For that reason, the City Attorney's Office First Chance program is partnering with Jewish Vocational Service in addition to the Mayor's Office of Gang Reducation and Youth Development, Councilmember Ed. P. Reyes, Councilmember Tom LaBonge, Council President Eric Garcetti, and Councilmember Jose Huizar to create the 2008 Northeast Youth Job Fair. It is scheduled for May 10, 10am-1pm, at the Glassell Park Community and Senior Center at 3750 Verdugo Road.
As active community members, the organizing partners are asking for your help in facilitating access to the program. For example, organizations can help get the word out, or facilitate transportation of their youth members to the event. We can use volunteers as event staff, or business sponsors for the employer hospitality brunch. Also, don't be afraid to talk to us if you have other collaboration ideas.
For further information about how you can get involved, please see the attached information letter, employer outreach flier, and youth outreach flier. You can also obtain further information by contacting the Northeast Neighborhood Prosecutor Community Resource Specialist, Armida Bayliff, at 310-575-8548, or via email at armida.bayliff@lacity.org. We look forward to hearing from you.

Los Angeles— The 3rd annual Lummis Day: The Festival of Northeast Los Angeles event, a free, public celebration of the diverse culture and history of the L.A.’s Arroyo neighborhoods will take place on Sunday, June 1, featuring musical, visual, culinary and literary artists representing an array of the region’s cultural traditions.
This year’s Lummis Day event will be presented by the Annenberg Foundation and the Autry National Center, with over a dozen community organizations, neighborhood councils, City Council Districts 1 and 14, the Department of Recreation and Parks and public radio station KPFK acting as sponsors.
Principal activities for the event will be staged as Sycamore Grove Park at 4900 N. Figueroa Street, where music, art, multi-cultural performances and food service begins at 12:30 pm, and at Lummis Home, 200 E. Avenue 43, where the program will begin with an 11:00 am poetry reading followed by a "trek" led along the route of Arroyo Seco riverbed. The Festival will feature musicians, local restaurants, dancers, performing artists and visual artists representing many cultural traditions of the Southern California region.
Last year’s event drew over 3,500 people to events at Sycamore Grove Park and Lummis Home. Over 25 community groups, a dozen galleries and half dozen restaurants participated.
Month-long series of community events follows gang-related shootout.
On the heels of a gang-related shootout on Drew Street, Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti announced that he will host a series of events to listen to community concerns and engage local residents in efforts to make their neighborhood safer.
“My top priority is making sure that our neighborhoods are safe places where families can thrive. We need to empower residents to work with each other and the police to stop the gang violence in Northeast L.A. These community events will give local families an opportunity to share their ideas for making their neighborhood safer and to learn about what they can do to help,” said Garcetti.
The month-long series of community public safety events will include a Public Safety Summit with Garcetti, Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton, and other city officials. Participants in the Summit will have the opportunity to express their concerns, share ideas, and hear an update on current public safety efforts.
Garcetti will also host a Leadership Academy focused on public safety issues in the community. Workshops will be held by representatives of the L.A. Bridges gang prevention program, Human Relations Commission, local schools, and the City Attorney's Office. Participants will learn how to organize a successful neighborhood watch, participate in Garcetti’s anti-graffiti program, Uniting Neighborhoods to Abolish Graffiti (UNTAG), and become effective partners with LAPD Senior Lead Officers. The Garcetti Leadership Academies are held regularly and have trained more than 1,000 local residents to be effective advocates for their community.
All events will begin at 9 a.m., and the schedule of events includes:
Atwater Village Residents Association (AVRA)
Town Hall Meeting
7:00pm. Doors open at 6:30pm
Christ's Church Hall
3852 Edenhurst Ave
Mitch O'Farrell, CD13 Deputy, will speak on many of the projects that affect Atwater Village - the River update, the Community College, the Hyperion Bridge, the Casitas Project and other items of interest, and will take questions from the community.
Also, the architect from the Casitas Project will be there to update the community.

On January 30, 2008, 11 historic bridges over the Los Angeles River were designated as city Historic-Cultural Landmarks. While this ensures a role for the city's Cultural Heritage Commission in reviewing proposed widening and replacement projects, it does not prevent outright demolition. The fate of the bridges will remain a topic of debate for years to come.
To enlighten and educate in a fun, interactive way, the Los Angeles Conservancy, the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), and Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) have joined forces to celebrate these bridges with two special events in April as part of "Spanning History: The Bridges of the Los Angeles River."
Yesterday's gang shootings in the Glassell Park area once again demonstrated our city's need to make safe communities our top priority.
In the last few years, we have poured additional resources into this area to stop the gang violence that has plagued the neighborhood for decades. LAPD and other law enforcement officers have been active in the neighborhood and were able to intervene immediately to bring safety back to the community. I want to thank the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department who did a stellar job of responding to this incident. I am committed to working with the police department to make sure it is getting the resources it needs to protect our communities.
I am also committed to creating more opportunities for young people to give them positive alternatives to gang life, including continuing a program I started last year called At the Park After Dark, which kept the Glassell Park Recreation Center open late into the evenings during
the summer.

The staff of the Office of Historic Resources (OHR) is proposing important changes aimed at strengthening demolition review procedures, clarifying criteria for historic designation, and enhancing notification of private property owners. The City of Los Angeles' Cultural Heritage Ordinance, originally approved by the City Council in 1962, created the procedures for the designation and protection of significant Los Angeles buildings and sites as Historic-Cultural Monuments. While the Ordinance has undergone several minor, procedural modifications, it has never been comprehensively updated to give our City a state-of-the-art historic preservation program.
The Cultural Heritage Commission has scheduled an initial public workshop on these ordinance amendments for February 7, 2008, 10:00 a.m. in Room 1010 of City Hall (200 N. Spring St., in downtown Los Angeles). This meeting will also include a presentation on the OHR's work program for 2008, and an update on SurveyLA, the Los Angeles Historic Resources Survey. We also welcome your written comments and suggestions on these proposals as the OHR and Commission finalize a draft ordinance for submission to the City Council later this year.

For the first time in our 15 years of the Tree Lighting, the Atwater Griffith Chamber of Commerce has opened this event to local and corporate sponsorships. However, the applicant is utilizing a 35% Density Bonus, Pursuant to Government Code 65915 to provide seven additional units, of which 7%, two dwelling units, will be set aside for very low income purposes.
The Deputy Advisory Agency will also consider a Zoning Administrator's Adjustment to permit a reduced horizontal open space dimension of 8.5 and 10 foot in lieu of the required 15-foor for common open space; an eight-foot encroachment into a 15-foot building line for the construction, use and maintenance of front yard private patios (A Building Line Removal is proposed under a separate application); An eight-foot encroachment into the 15-foot front yard setback of a RD3 Zone Lot for the construction use and maintenance of porches and patios (If the Building Line is removed under separate application prior to the issuance of a building permit); Reduced spaces between buildings and passageways allowing four inches between buildings in lieu of the 20-foot required and 12-foot passageways; and to allow more than 50% paving in the front yard.

unofficial Atwater Village walking night
Date: Wednesday, November 21st, 2007 (But it goes on every night until the 25th so if you can't make it on the 21st, please go another night!)
Time: starting at 6:30PM
Where: The zoo parking lot (take the 5 freeway north to the Zoo exit otherwise you will have to park near the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round and be shuttled over to the entrance). Also, there is no official Atwater Village meeting location, so look for friends and neighbors or just start walking it. In the future we will attempt to organize a meeting place better but this is a very last second event. Sorry!
Why: The DWP is having a week of walking nights as a trial to see if people would want to walk the festival of lights. As having less cars driving the festival would be beneficial for a plethora of reasons, we highly encourage Atwater Village residents and friends in other communities to come and walk the festival and show the DWP that they should continue this in the future. If it goes well there is the possibility it will permanently become a walking event which would be great.

Join Friends of Atwater Village for another Mural Dedication Ceremony, this time at the historic Vince’s Market building, located at the corner of Silver Lake Blvd. and Atwater Avenue.
The mural’s theme, “Past, Present and Future”, recreates the Vince’s Market building as it was prior to 1946. What is now Vince's Market was originally three separate businesses -- a beauty shop, a barber shop, and the market. The mural shows images of the everyday items and products that were found at a “superette” market, barber shop and beauty salon in the 1940’s.
This project was funded by a Community Beautification Grant from the L.A. Board of Public Works.

---
The purpose of this study is to create a community specific parking ordinance to ease parking requirements for new or change-of-use businesses along Glendale Blvd by identifying “underused” public parking spaces and allowing these businesses to purchase them under a “parking credit” scheme. The subsequent ordinance would allow businesses that are required to have a specific number of parking spaces to purchase “parking credits” from the City in lieu of building more spaces onsite. The parking credits available for purchase would be limited by actual parking capacity within a predetermined boundary along Glendale Blvd and adjacent residential streets.
At the January 11th, 2007 General Board Meeting the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council (AVNC) voted to fund a “parking credit” study that will focus on commercial parking along Glendale Blvd. The AVNC Board voted to contract with Civic Enterprise Associates (CEA), a consulting firm, to spearhead the study and will pay CEA $6,500.00 for its services.
A freshman member of the California Assembly, an executive from Warner Brothers, the chairman of the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) and one of the region’s conservation pioneers will be among those honored this October by the civic group that put the Los Angeles River on the map over 20 years ago.
Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) will host its sixth annual River Awards and Fiesta on Friday evening, October 19, 2007 at the L.A. River Center just northeast of downtown Los Angeles. The event is the group’s principal annual fundraiser; Councilmember Tom LaBonge will emcee the evening.
FoLAR is a non-profit organization founded by poet Lewis MacAdams in 1986 to protect and restore the natural and historic heritage of the Los Angeles River and its riparian habitat through inclusive planning, education and wise stewardship. What began as a dream about what many considered a “concrete ditch” is now the linchpin in L.A.’s urban ecology and environmental justice movement. Earlier this year, the City of Los Angeles adopted a Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan to guide urban planning along the River from downtown L.A. to the San Fernando Valley. The plan incorporates many ideas long advocated by FoLAR.
FoLAR is honoring six individuals who have contributed to the River’s revitalization:

On Thursday August 16 at 6 PM the GPIA will be hosting an Evening with Gail Goldberg, Director of the L.A. City Department of Planning. The Land Use Forum will take place at the Glassell Park Community and Senior Center, 3750 N. Verdugo Road in the Public Storage Building next to the Glassell Park Swimming Pool. Ms. Goldberg will be discussing how the Planning Department intends to implement the objectives and goals in the "Do Real Planning" document that is part of the Department's Strategic Plan, and how that might effect the current Community Plans all our communities.
Gail Goldberg is a very dynamic speaker with a great deal of planning experience with a vision for our City. Come out and here how she and her staff are working with other city departments, elected officials, and residents to reshape our city to be ready for the challenges we face in the future. She will also take questions from the audience.
Ms. Goldberg was appointed Director of Los Angeles City Planning Department in February 2006. As director, Ms. Goldberg is responsible for organizing and directing the policies and planning activities of the City’s Planning Department. Prior to joining the Los Angeles Planning Department, Ms Goldberg worked for 17 years in the Planning Department of the City of San Diego, the last five years serving as Planning Director. Her responsibilities included all long-range city-wide and community planning. Other responsibilities included Facilities Financing, Transportation Planning, the Multiple Species Conservation Program and special projects. She oversaw a planning process to update the city’s 20-year-old General Plan. The initial result was the adoption of a strategic framework plan that articulated a 20-year vision for the City and a long-term strategy for achieving that vision known as the "City of Villages" plan.

AVNC Bylaws require a board election every two years. The last election was held on August 14, 2004, almost 3 years ago. The current AVNC Board (2004-2006) has already served well beyond its 2 year term. The Board’s current term should have ended in August 2006 but has been forcibly extended to the October 2007 date after 3 failed attempts to hold a board election. The first attempt to hold the August 2006 election failed when AVNC Co-Chair, Jeff Gardner, failed to submit the required paperwork to the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment (DONE) in a timely fashion; the second attempt in October 2006 failed when the preferred Independent Election Administrator (IEA) could not be secured to monitor the election; and the third attempt failed when the 2nd choice IEA, Walt Sweeny, canceled the February 2007 election for supposed “irregularities”.
The scheduled October 6 election will mark the 4th attempt to carry out a vaild election by the current AVNC Board.

Come and join your neighbors and fellow stakeholders in Glassell Park and Cypress Park as we document all the assets our neighborhood has to offer.
We need volunteers to walk our streets and document all we have by measuring, taking notes and pictures. The effort is being facilitated by a professional, Deborah Murphy, whose specialty is Urban Design and Planning...she has organized a similar walkabout in Hollywood that was very successful.
Come to the Glassell Park Community And Senior Center at 8 AM on Saturday June 9, and be greeted by Council President Eric Garcetti and Councilmember Jose Huizar before breaking into 25 groups. You'll be shuttled to the locations along the 12.5 miles we'll be documenting.
The intent is to have a facilitator in each group who has a background or experience in city planning to guide you through your checklist as your group takes stock of your assigned area.
When we are all done, the information will be given to Ms. Murphy to collate and she will produce a summary analysis. The analysis will provide a baseline for our neighborhoods for the city planning department and our council offices and local community organizations to use for discussions about land use in the future.
If you want to know more about this, there will be two informative introductory outreach meetings before the Walkabout:
Tuesday, May 29 at 6:30 PM Aragon Elementary School - 1118 Aragon Ave. Cypress Park, CA 90065
Wednesday, May 30 at 6:30 PM Glassell Park Elementary School - 2211 W. Ave. 30 Glassell Park, CA 90065

June 16th-July 21th Opening Reception Saturday June 16th 7-10pm
They stopped the Rose Parade. They shouted down elected officials. They negotiated the building of an AIDS Ward in a public health system that left people with AIDS suffering in hallways due to lack of a dedicated place for them. They were members of ACT UP.
Drkrm. Gallery proudly announces the opening of SILENCE = DEATH: Los Angeles AIDS Activism 1987 - 2007, slated for a June 16th opening and running through July 21st.
Commemorating the 20th anniversary of ACT UP/Los Angeles, the exhibition features the work of Chuck Stallard, who documented one of the most dramatic and successful protest groups in recent history. The AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) became a national and world-wide movement, with one of its most effective chapters in Los Angeles.
ACT UP/LA's quite effective strategy was to mix angry street activism with hometown media-savvy.
The group was known for its smart graphics and catchy slogans (“He Kills Me” read the caption for a poster of President Ronald Reagan, who failed to act on or mention AIDS in the critical earliest years of the pandemic). ACT UP worked nationally as well as locally, initiating such federal programs as compassionate access to drugs still under FDA review, and demanding universal healthcare as the first step to responding to AIDS.
With its core of gay male activists, ACT UP formed progressive coalitions to press for a women’s right to choose, fair labor practices, and a diversion of tax dollars from foreign invasions to domestic healthcare. Silence = Death revives some of the most dramatic moments captured by a photographer never afraid to put his lens in the fray.

It is with great enthusiasm that jFERRARI Gallery proudly announces their One-Year Anniversary Show! We have invited 27 of our most talented artists who work in an array of representational and abstract styles to exhibit. "Chapa" our resident band will also be performing for us. A sound best described as experimental folk with a classic approach and instrumentation, some call it "Experimental Storytelling”. Opening for “Chapa” will be our newest addition “Good On Paper”, a local indie band of two. It has been an exceptionally monumental first year and we look forward to continuing and exploring more diverse exhibitions for the coming year. We will continue to support individual emerging artists, as well as representing new artists. As the art scene in Northeast Los Angeles blooms, we will continue our interrelationships between our local communities and venues. We will also keep striving to be community involved by generating more collaborations with one another. We hope this impetus effort will revitalize Atwater Village and its neighboring communities.
