Museums of the Arroyo Day 5/17: six museums along historic Arroyo Seco open for FREE to public

MUSEUMS OF THE ARROYO CELEBRATE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF “MOTA DAY” BY TRAVELING BACK IN TIME TO THE 1920s

Six museums in Los Angeles and Pasadena located along the Arroyo Seco will open free to the public

Sunday, May 17; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Participating museums: Heritage Square Museum, The Gamble House, Los Angeles Police Historical Society Museum, the Lummis Home and Garden, the Pasadena Museum of History and the Autry National Center’s Southwest Museum of the American Indian

Calendar summary follows release

PASADENA, Calif. Longtime devotees of the daylong event where six museums located along the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena open free to the public call it “MOTA Day.” But those who have yet to discover this opportunity to travel back in time to experience life in early Los Angeles through its art, architecture and history may appreciate a little more explanation.

“MOTA Day stands for Museums of the Arroyo Day,” explains Kori Capaldi, program and operations manager at the Gamble House in Pasadena, which is internationally recognized as the most complete and best-preserved work of American Arts and Crafts architects Charles and Henry Greene. “And, this year, our MOTA Day participants are excited to be celebrating our 20th anniversary.”

Museums joining the Gamble House at this year’s event on Sunday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., include Heritage Square Museum, the Los Angeles Police Historical Society Museum, the Lummis Home and Garden, the Pasadena Museum of History, and the Autry National Center’s Southwest Museum of the American Indian. Most will also present exhibitions that pay tribute, in some form or fashion, to the event’s milestone anniversary.

“For example, at the Gamble House, visitors will see cars from the 1920s,” says Capaldi. “We’ll also have children’s crafts and refreshments on site. But, of course, the highlight of a visit to every museum participating in MOTA Day is a tour of the facility itself. There’s a lot to see and even more to learn!”

Ample parking is available at each museum, as well as continuous shuttle service between sites, for those who don’t wish to drive from venue to venue. However, as MOTA Day ends promptly at 4 p.m., when making plans to visit, please remember that shuttles will stop running shortly after 4 p.m. as well.

“The writer Pearl Buck wrote, ‘If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday,’ ” says Diane Siegel, Manager of Programming and Curriculum Development at the Pasadena Museum of History. “I can’t think of a better place for all of us to start our journey than with MOTA Day.”

For more information on the 20th Annual MOTA Day, visit www.museumsofthearroyo.com or call the hotline number at 213.740.TOUR (8687). Programs may be subject to change.

SPECIAL EVENTS AT MUSEUMS OF THE ARROYO DAY:

The Gamble House:
Although car enthusiasts will enjoy seeing the collection of 1920s-era cars on site at The Gamble House, the star attraction for MOTA Day visitors will undoubtedly be the house itself. Designed in 1908 by architects Greene & Greene, the Gamble House was commissioned by David and Mary Gamble, of Cincinnati, Ohio, as a retirement residence. David and Mary lived in the house until their deaths in 1923 and 1929, respectively. Their son, Cecil Huggins Gamble, and his wife, Louise Gibbs Gamble, lived in the house beginning in 1946 and briefly considered selling it. They soon changed their minds, however, when prospective buyers spoke of painting the interior teak and mahogany woodwork white! The Gambles realized the artistic importance of the house and it remained in the Gamble family until 1966, when it was deeded to the city of Pasadena in a joint agreement with the University of Southern California School of Architecture.

Cookies, lemonade and smoothies from Jamba Juice will be available on the lawn as well as craft projects for children. The Gamble House is located at 4 Westmoreland Place in Pasadena.

Heritage Square:
Heritage Square, a “living history museum” of 8 historic structures reflecting the settlement and development of Southern California from the Civil War to the early 20th Century, will present   “Lost to Progress” – a look at the balance between preservation and progress, as illustrated by how the three historical neighborhoods of Chavez Ravine, Chinatown and Bunker Hill were destroyed so that Los Angeles could develop into a modern, world class city – as part of its MOTA Day programming.  Visitors are encouraged not to miss The Longfellow-Hastings Octagon Veranda, one of three buildings of this type of rare architecture in the state of California. Costumed docents will be available at each building to answer questions.

Guests can also visit a Spanish American War encampment, view traditional woodcarving and blacksmith demonstrationslisten to historical storytellers, hear live music, and much moreChildren are encouraged, too, to play with Victorian games and make period crafts throughout the day.

“Heritage Square takes its guests back in time to an era where electricity was a novelty, a trip to the beach was often a full-weekend activity and manners were distinctly different from those of today,” says Jessica Maria Alicea-Covarrubias, Director of Museum Administration and Operations. Heritage Square is located at 3800 Homer Street in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Police Historical Society Museum:

The Los Angeles Police Historical Society Museum, which chronicles the history of the LAPD from 1869 to the present, is located in the former Renaissance Revival style Highland Park Police Station, at 6045 York Boulevard in Los Angeles.

“The station was built in 1925, which fits perfectly into our 1920s theme, ” says Executive Director Glynn Martin. “After it closed in 1983, it suffered from vandals, arson fires and water damage. But, since then, the station has been salvaged and restored by the Historical Society and is now a registered National Historic landmark.”

MOTA Day visitors can tour the facilities, which feature private collections and historical memorabilia dating back to the late 19th century. Children will have a chance to climb into a retired police helicopter and try on police gear. Many guests also enjoy using their own cameras to create a “Booking Photo” of their favorite “crook” in the historic jail.

Autry National Center’s Southwest Museum of the American Indian:
The Autry National Center’s Southwest Museum of the American Indian is the oldest museum in Los Angeles. It also houses one of the nation’s most important museum, library and archive collections related to the American Indian.

Visitors can enjoy Native American performers and tour the ethnobotanical garden, as well as learn about the museum’s recent major repair projects. Video presentations will be shown in the Braun Research Library.

The museum is located at 234 Museum Drive in Los Angeles.

Lummis Home and Garden:

The turn-of-the century home of the founder of the Southwest Museum of the American Indian, Charles Fletcher Lummis, is part of the MOTA Day tour as well. Lummis – an early activist, author, anthropologist, photographer, and civic booster who encouraged and nurtured some of the West’s finest poets, writers and artists – was also the first city editor of the fledgling Los Angeles Times. Tours of the Lummis Home, built over a 12-year period with stones from the arroyo, will be available throughout MOTA Day as well as self-guided garden tours.

In addition to touring the house and water-wise demonstration garden, MOTA Day visitors are invited to hear folksingers, Gigi and Mike, entertain children and adults with turn of the century folk songs and sing-alongs from 11 am to 12 pm. At one and three pm. historian Daniel Lewis will present “Charles F. Lummis in Chautauqua,” a historical characterization of the home’s creator

In the El Alisal garden, the Arroyo Arts Collective will present a multimedia display, “Bringing the Past to Light: New Art from Old Images” featuring an innovative mix of past, present and future visions of the Arroyo area. The Lummis Home and Garden is located at 200 Avenue 43 in Los Angeles.

Pasadena Museum of History:

The Pasadena Museum of History –located on the grounds of the Fenyes Mansion, an elegant 1905 Beaux Arts style building that is one of the few remaining grand homes on Pasadena's former "Millionaire's Row" – will celebrate MOTA Day’s 20th Anniversary by placing special emphasis on telling stories from the 1920s. “Family Stories: Sharing a Community’s Legacy” will chronicle the lives of six different families representing the largest population groups in early Pasadena. All had settled in Pasadena by the 1920s.

Several times throughout the day, visitors will hear “Travels with Babsie,” a dramatic monologue near a 1920s Model T car, which will chronicle Pasadena resident Leonora Curtin’s adventures by car throughout the Southwest. The monologue is based on postcards Leonora Curtin sent her grandmother throughout the 1920s.

In addition, “newboys” carrying news bags filled with stories culled from archival 1920s newspapers stroll throughout the campus. A guest artist will also lead children in making paper dolls in the style popular with children of the 1920s and teach them about 20 famous people who have lived, worked, or studied in the Pasadena area. The museum is located at 470 West Walnut Street in Pasadena.

Friends of the Los Angeles River Partners with Frogtown Artwalk and the Blake Lofts for New Clean-up Site on May 9th

Los Angeles, CA – May 4, 2009 – Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) is pleased to announce that they are partnering with the Blake Lofts and the Frogtown Artwalk for a new clean up site along the Los Angeles River behind the lofts, 1839 Blake Avenue, in the burgeoning Elysian Valley neighborhood, often referred to as Frogtown, after the frog population that once thrived in the adjacent LA River. Frogtown became a clean-up site after Blake Lofts resident and noted local photographer Paul Redmond ran into FoLAR founder Lewis McAdams walking along the river. They determined that the Frogtown area was a perfect clean-up site as the area is bordered by the river and many of the area’s artists, business owners and residents are concerned environmentalists. Redmond is now the site captain for the Frogtown river clean-up taking place from 9am – 12 noon on May 9th.

The Frogtown clean-up will take place in the Blake Lofts parking lot adjacent to a portion of the river's natural bottom in the heart of Elysian Valley. All neighbors, the Frogtown Arts Collective and green minded businesses are invited to make the cleanup, both rewarding and informative.

The Green Committee from the Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce will be on site informing the public on green issues, along with their giant plastic bag ball. Local environmental arts collective Grenememe along with photographer Paul Redmond will collaborate on “Trashy Art” a map and storytelling project around the clean-up, on a 12 foot graphic of the river from Fletcher to Riverside. Along with clean-up volunteers, they will document weird and not so wonderful trash through physical collection, photography and narrative. Redmond will set up the Frogtown Fotobooth on site, documenting the event through portraits of volunteers and their "river finds". At the end of the day Greenmeme will take the mural and translate it into a graphic illustration. The “Trashy Art” project will be shown at the next Frogrown Artwalk, other local events and online.

Participants are encouraged to wear clothes they can get dirty and sturdy shoes. Work gloves, sunscreen, and refillable water bottles are also recommended. The Frogtown Clean-up will supply water for your bottles from a cooler, snacks, music and more. This event will be a great learning experience and fun for kids of all ages. There will be a limited number of free FoLAR 20th Anniversary River Clean-up tee shirts for volunteers and every volunteer will receive a free tote bag. There will also be a fundraising raffle for FoLAR.

FoLAR was founded on the belief that effective advocacy, education, collaboration and imagination can accomplish great things. We know firsthand that urban waterways restoration requires creativity, technical knowledge and tenacity - but also that our goals, while vast and visionary, are also undeniably attainable.

For press information on the Frogtown Cleanup Site please contact Susan von Seggern at susan@susanvonseggern.com or 213-840-0077. To volunteer please contact Paul Redmond on info@paul-redmond.com or 323.660.6366.

Pamela Burgess Named Theodore Payne Foundation's First Artist-in-Residence

April 1, 2008 thru December 31, 2008

As you stroll the Foundation’s grounds this summer, you may notice a woman intently sketching a plant part – or, more precisely, the shadow of that plant part. The woman you’re watching is Pamela Burgess, TPF’s first Artist-in-Residence.

Pamela’s residency at Theodore Payne covers a nine-month period from April 1 through December 31, 2008. During this time, she will produce a body of work in various media based on California native plants found in the Foundation’s gardens and nursery. She will also teach classes, the first of which, “An Introduction to Field Journals,” was held in April. Her residency culminates with an exhibition of “shadow drawings,” journals and sculpture running October through December in the Theodore Payne Art Gallery.

Pamela’s career spans the graphic and fine arts. Her sculptures in steel and stone, and found natural materials led to a fine furniture line, a large-scale sculpture commission in downtown Los Angeles, and exhibitions at Occidental College and the Los Angeles County Museum Rental Gallery. Recent exhibitions include Metro Gallery in Los Angeles and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson.

In addition to working with nature and art, Pamela is active in the community. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Citizens Committee to Save Elysian Park (since 1996), and in 2007, she was appointed to the City of Los Angeles Elysian Park Master Plan Oversight Committee.  She is a member of the Southern California Horticultural Society, and the Sierra Club Camera Committee (Angeles Chapter).

Pamela’s work is motivated by a fascination with nature and its materials, and a reverence for craftsmanship.  Each of her drawings represents the shadow cast by a botanical and captures a moment in time - the transitory nature of life.  They are intended to express a kind of serenity similar to a direct experience of nature.

We’re delighted to have her at the Foundation!

BARNES & NOBLE MAKES GENEROUS DONATION OF BOOKS TO FRIENDS OF ATWATER LIBRARY

The Barnes and Noble bookstore on Glendale Avenue in Glendale closed its doors just as its new bookstore located in the Americana in Glendale opened its doors.  In a conversation with Irma Golovina, Manager of the now-closed store, Marie Conte, volunteer at the Library and Board member of Friends of Atwater Village Library learned that the new store was opening with all new books and that the books at the closed store would be returned to the publishers or sent to storage.  With the proposed budget cuts for the library system in mind, Marie asked Ms. Golovina if it would be possible for Barnes and Noble to donate some books to the Friends of Atwater Library to be used by the Library.  As a result of Ms. Golovina checking with senior management, Friends of Atwater Library became the recipient of a very generous donation of books from Barnes and Noble!  Marie, Christine Anthony and Netty Carr caravanned to the book store and picked up the boxes of donated books.

Stella Nahapetian, Atwater Village Library’s senior librarian, will now look through the books to determine which ones will go on the library shelves for circulation within the system.  Those books that don’t make it onto the shelves will be fed into the monthly book sales held every third Saturday by the Friends of Atwater Library.  The proceeds from the book sales go to the Atwater Village Library to supplement its budget and/or to purchase items for which there are no funds.

The Friends of Atwater Village Library whole-heartedly thank Barnes and Noble for its very generous donation of books!

"Bring the Farmer to Your School" program comes to Atwater Ave Elementary School

Atwater Village, CA – The Atwater Village Farmers’ Market has found yet another way to bring local, fresh produce to Atwater Village!  In a collaborative effort, the (AVFM) has coordinated a farmer visit to Atwater Elementary School using LAUSD and SEE-LA’s Bring the Farmer to Your School program.

On January 23rd, from 8:20 a.m. – 12:10 p.m., Farmer Eli Sheiman, of Tutti Frutti Organic Farms, will visit the Atwater Elementary School classroom and teach over 250 students about life on the farm.  The children will learn that carrots grow form the ground, and that they don’t just appear at the produce aisle at the market!  Students will learn many things, such as the difference between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bugs for growing fruits and vegetables.  The students will be able to taste tangerines, apples and carrots straight from Eli’s farm, and learn that carrots can actually have a sweet, flavorful taste.  “I like the kids to have a connection with where their food comes from, how it affects their bodies, and become excited about eating healthy” – Farmer Eli Sheiman.

The Farmer Eli’s visit is being funded by the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council, who share with the (AVFM) their commitment to the health of the Atwater community.

For the past six years, SEE-LA and LAUSD have been collaborating and operating the Bring the Farmer to Your School program.  This program is committed to teaching children in lower-income communities about health, farming, and fresh fruits and vegetables.  “SEE-LA is proud to bring its valuable programs into the same communities where we also operate our farmers’ markets”. – Pompea Smith, CEO, SEE-LA

The Atwater Village Farmers’ Market is located on Glendale Ave. and Larga Ave. at 3250 Glendale Blvd. in the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot.  Free parking is available off Larga Ave.

The Market is operated by Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los Angeles (SEE-LA) as a nonprofit community activity.

BLACK MARIA goes UNDER THE TABLE

Welcome to  Under the Table,  the only store of its kind in Atwater Village and Northeast LA.  At Black Maria Gallery, our patrons are always asking to see uncommon artworks that we might be storing in 'the back room' - 'under the table,' so to speak. This is how we got the idea of offering special objects made by the artists we represent. But then we expanded that idea considerably, to include a whole slew of unique objects to bring something new to the discerning collector.

All those who are left cold by the mass-production stuff, will be thrilled to discover Under the Table.

NEW GRASSROOTS GROUP HOPES TO RALLY COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR A NEW HIGH SCHOOL IN TAYLOR YARDS / NORTHEAST L.A.

Taylor Yard, Parcel F

Friends of Central High School #13, a new grassroots group, held a demonstration on Sunday, October 28, 2007 to rally community support for a much needed new high school in the Northeast Los Angeles area. The demonstration was held at intersection of San Fernando Rd and Cazador St, in front of the proposed  23-acre site for the new high school – Taylor Yard, Parcel F.

"The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has been outreaching to, and working with, our local communities since 2001 in order to locate a much needed high school in [Northeast L.A. area]. Currently, the children from [Atwater Village, Elysian Valley], Glassell Park and Cypress Park are sent to Eagle Rock, Franklin, or Marshall High. Those 3 schools all suffer with overcrowding which would be proportionally relieved if a new high school is built at Taylor Yards."

"There were numerous community meetings to locate and identify a preferred site for the high school. Despite a few drawbacks, the only area large enough where no homes or businesses would be disturbed and which was centrally located to [serve various Northeast communities], was Parcel F in Taylor Yard."

"While LAUSD was engaged in negotiations to acquire the property, developer Richard Meruelo, [of MerueloMaddux Properties], swooped in to buy it. Currently Mr. Meruelo is trying to negotiate a diminished and compromised school" under his so called “Riversedge Village” plan that includes high density housing, retail development and the high school.

FAV CELEBRATES ATWATER VILLAGE HISTORY AT VINCE’S MARKET

Friends of Atwater Village (FAV) has completed another graffiti abatement mural, this time at the historic Vince’s Market building, located at the corner of Silver Lake Blvd. and Atwater Avenue.

The mural’s theme, “Past, Present and Future”, recreates the Vince’s Market building as it was prior to 1946. What is now Vince's Market was originally three separate businesses -- a beauty shop, a barber shop, and the market.  In 1946 the beauty shop and barber shop were moved across the street and the market was expanded.

The mural shows images of the everyday items and products that were found at a “superette” market, barber shop and beauty salon in the 1940’s.

Vince's Market Circa 1940's

Muralist Rafael Escamilla who created and painted this wonderful piece of art, worked closely with the original owners of Vince’s Market, the Caravellas, and other long time residents so that he could keep all the images historically accurate for the 1940’s. They relied on old Atwater Village pictures and good memories of a bygone era. Come by and view this wonderful recreation of a bygone era and sit a moment on the “bench” to take it all in.

This mural project was funded by a Community Beautification Grant from the L.A. Board of Public Works.

Friends of Atwater Village (FAV) is a "hands on" group of volunteers working to improve and beautify our neighborhood, from neighborhood clean-ups to mural projects and more. SILENCE = DEATH: Los Angeles AIDS Activism 1987–2007 - "dkrm gallery" exhibition of Chuck Stallard's photography

Photographs by Chuck Stallard curated by Stuart Timmons

June 16th-July 21th Opening Reception Saturday June 16th 7-10pm

They stopped the Rose Parade. They shouted down elected officials. They negotiated the building of an AIDS Ward in a public health system that left people with AIDS suffering in hallways due to lack of a dedicated place for them. They were members of ACT UP.

Drkrm. Gallery proudly announces the opening of SILENCE = DEATH: Los Angeles AIDS Activism 1987 - 2007, slated for a June 16th opening and running through July 21st.

Commemorating the 20th anniversary of ACT UP/Los Angeles, the exhibition features the work of Chuck Stallard, who documented one of the most dramatic and successful protest groups in recent history. The AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) became a national and world-wide movement, with one of its most effective chapters in Los Angeles.

ACT UP/LA's quite effective strategy was to mix angry street activism with hometown media-savvy.

The group was known for its smart graphics and catchy slogans (“He Kills Me” read the caption for a poster of President Ronald Reagan, who failed to act on or mention AIDS in the critical earliest years of the pandemic). ACT UP worked nationally as well as locally, initiating such federal programs as compassionate access to drugs still under FDA review, and demanding universal healthcare as the first step to responding to AIDS.

With its core of gay male activists, ACT UP formed progressive coalitions to press for a women’s right to choose, fair labor practices, and a diversion of tax dollars from foreign invasions to domestic healthcare. Silence = Death revives some of the most dramatic moments captured by a photographer never afraid to put his lens in the fray.

LACC Northeast "Van de Kamp's" Campus Status as of April 16, 2007

Early this month, the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) Board of Trustees designated the Northeast Campus projects with the highest possible priority of all projects within the entire LACCD Proposition A/AA Bond Program.  As such, the District has notified the Division of the State Architect (DSA) that all Northeast Campus projects have the highest priority status for DSA review.  As a result, all other District projects will not progress whenever a Northeast Campus project is ready for review by DSA.  Therefore, DSA has been asked that every resource be made available to finalize Northeast Campus projects and have them stamped out as soon as possible before any other District projects are reviewed.

Given the latest construction cost estimates, an additional $8 million must be added to the current construction budget in order to build the Northeast Campus as one single project.  As such, the District has taken an aggressive approach to assemble a bid package that will include the components needed to start the construction of the Adaptive Reuse of the Bakery Building within the next six (6) months.  The bid package for the Bakery Building will include the Site Plan and the Utility Plan from the New Education Building, the Central Plant Project and the Street Improvement Projects for San Fernando Road and Bakery Lane.  The New Education Building will be completed at a date when additional funding becomes available.

It is with great enthusiasm that jFERRARI Gallery proudly announces their One-Year Anniversary Show! We have invited 27 of our most talented artists who work in an array of representational and abstract styles to exhibit. "Chapa" our resident band will also be performing for us. A sound best described as experimental folk with a classic approach and instrumentation, some call it "Experimental Storytelling”. Opening for “Chapa” will be our newest addition “Good On Paper”, a local indie band of two. It has been an exceptionally monumental first year and we look forward to continuing and exploring more diverse exhibitions for the coming year. We will continue to support individual emerging artists, as well as representing new artists. As the art scene in Northeast Los Angeles blooms, we will continue our interrelationships between our local communities and venues. We will also keep striving to be community involved by generating more collaborations with one another. We hope this impetus effort will revitalize Atwater Village and its neighboring communities.

Atwater Playhouse offers Atwater Village residents FREE admission to their new 2007 production!!!

Atwater Playhouse and Method Acting Company opened its third original production, Hands of an Angry God, this past weekend. In celebration of its one-year anniversary, the theater would like to extend an invitation to all residents of the burgeoning Atwater Village, to attend the production for FREE. Please note that all one needs to do is mention they saw the invitation on Atwater Village News – Blog for FREE admission.

This original play was written by playwright Laurie Powers and directed by Atwater resident Jamie Paolinetti. Hands of an Angry God follows the lives of two American families and communities during World War II. Through the war and consequential events, their lives become entangled and they are forced to confront their beliefs and their desires.

Rich in symbolism and allegory, Hands of an Angry God offers the audience the chance to take a hard look at some of the most poignant topics of today: war, religion, politics, and the effect on relationships.

Pot-ted's First Art Show

Pot-ted is excited to host their first Art Opening. We will be featuring artists Carolyn Mendoza and Robert Nydam on Friday, April 20th, from 7pm-10pm. Both artists will be present.

Carolyn Mendoza, a fine artist from Venice, California, has established a long-term career in working with metal.  Influenced by nature, she creates unique sculptural designs by welding natural forms on to steel. Using various patina techniques, vivid colors hidden beneath the surface are drawn out.  These one-of-a-kind organic artworks can be enjoyed in both indoor and outdoor settings and can be custom designed to suit the client's individual needs.

Bob Nydam's signature is the interplay of chaos and order. Chaos flows through the images of insects evoking a gut-level emotional reaction without the baggage of most cultural and religious icons. Plain and simple: bugs are creepy! Look again and the ordered backgrounds depict a need to control the world through the trappings of dualism and fundamentalism. These layers of cacophony and control aspire to create a third layer existent on a more hopeful and deeper psycho-spiritual level.

We look forward to seeing you.

5 Gateways into Elysian Park Juried Competition

Citizens Committee to Save Elysian Park Sponsors: 5 Gateways into Elysian Park Juried Competition

CCSEP is seeking proposals to design and construct five Gateways into Elysian Park that will create a cohesive identity for this historical park.

Up to five artists, architects or designers (in teams or individually) from the Greater Los Angeles area will be selected to submit final Design, Construction, and Installation Proposals to the selection committee.

Elysian Park, the oldest park in Los Angeles, contains the last remaining parcel of Pueblo lands that were included in the original Spanish land grant from King Carlos of Spain over two centuries ago.

Project Goals
Boldly define and enhance the five entrances to Elysian Park, several of which are highly visible and well-traveled.
Remain sensitive to existing and surrounding topography.
Provide a more cohesive awareness of the whole of Elysian Park through shared design elements.  (Not all gateways need to be alike.)
Each gateway design MUST contain the text Elysian Park and 1886.

Bea Gold Retrospective Art Show

jFERRARI Gallery is happy to announce its first Retrospective art exhibit featuring BEA GOLD.

She is an artist who has painted and done woodcuts since she was very young. She will turn eighty years old this April! Her paintings are portraits of people and they were either commissioned, bartered or were painted as gifts. Her paintings are owned by people around the country and this is the first time they will be together,to be seen in the same place.

She is the mother of four grown children.  She lives with her granddaughter Zahava Jones.  She was married to Jack Gold for 53 years, he died on their 53rd anniversary.

She has wanted a retrospective for years but it was always too hard to make it happen.  This year she turns eighty and she figures it’s now or never, so she took on the challenge to put it together after discovering jFERRARI Gallery.

The Retrospective Print and Paint Show will bring together works covering 65 years and many of the people in the paintings will attend the event.

Please join us on Saturday, April 7th, 2007 at 6pm for an opening reception.

DAN WOOSTER "Neo-Expressionist Figures"

Acclaimed California artist, DAN WOOSTER, will show a vibrant collection of fine art at the jFERRARI Gallery from February 10th to March 10th, 2007.

Dan began painting at age eleven on the East Coast and has subsequently continued with his passion in the same studio in California for over 14 years. Numerous solo shows have traced the progress of Wooster’s maturing work. His imagery is confined to the classic subject matter; landscape, still-life, and figure. The process involves a build-up of plaster and paint. Both are scrapped away, and then added again, in an often vigorous interchange.

The transformation of a painting from the random to the specific is much like the search for meaning in life. Relating lines, shapes and colors in an instinctual way is the quest to create meaning. Wooster allows himself the freedom to create spontaneously, and balances the ensuing chaos with control and intellect.

In the words of the artist, “The joy comes from creating an image that I didn’t predict.” Many people are walking around asleep- relying on the ego portion of their brain to operate in the world. The ego is a limited library of past experiences. Creating life in the present moment is Wooster’s goal in painting.

jFERRARI is a gallery of contemporary art dedicated to supporting emerging and established fine artists.  The gallery is active with monthly exhibitions of diverse, unique and innovative works of art.

For more information on the gallery, visit  www.jferrarigallery.com

jFERRARI Gallery presents FIGURE IT OUT

jFERRARI Gallery, one of the hottest newer art galleries in the L.A. art scene, brings together no less than 20 exceptional artists' work for a fascinating exhibit which examines the tradition of figurative painting and its relationship with contemporary abstract painting. A figure is, by definition, a human form, or it can be a numerical symbol or a graphic representation of a form. FIGURE IT OUT portrays the human form realistically, symbolically and as a representation of an emotion or feeling. This exhibit encompasses many art movements and art media with which to illustrate the human figure, making it a diverse collection suited to all art enthusiasts.

Each unique piece depicts the human figure, whether in an exquisite Polaroid emulsion transfer (Susan Berkowitz) or a painting that embodies escapism and fantasy (Alyse Livingston), and stretches these parameters to include alluring contemporary art (Fred Chuang, Cristian Vega-Rojo) along with surrealism/cubism (Eduardo Bonilla) and erotica (Dani Katz, Eban Lehrer).

Atwater Playhouse announces Opening Night of "Invisible Bars"

CONTACT: Andrea Alstot, 805-794-8021, andialstot@yahoo.com

ATWATER PLAYHOUSE

3191 Casitas Avenue

Los Angeles, CA 90039

www.atwaterplayhouse.com

Los Angeles, CALIFORNIAThursday, October 19, 2006 - The Atwater Playhouse is pleased to announce the Friday, October 20th, opening of its second original play in 2006. Titled “Invisible Bars,” the play boasts a talented cast of three men and seven women, with all lead characters being female.

This new one-act play, written and directed by critically acclaimed documentary filmmaker and playwright, Jamie Paolinetti,  invites the audience to examine the difficulties women continue to encounter in today’s society as they struggle for equality with their male counterparts. Set in Los Angeles, this contemporary drama invites the audience to question whether the impossibility of sameness between the sexes will keep women from ever being truly equal in the eyes of men.

Paolinetti’s past work includes last spring’s critically acclaimed original theatre production, “I Do”, which received rave reviews throughout the Los Angeles theatre community. Paolinetti’s films are titled The Hard Road, and PRO (www.prothemovie.com). Both feature documentaries have been sold world-wide, and played to sold-out audiences throughout the United States. Paolinetti’s first film, The Hard Road, was named "Top-5 Documentaries” of the year by DVD Talk.

The Atwater Playhouse is supported by a core company of classically trained method actors who have collectively performed in Los Angeles, New York and abroad.  The space itself is an intimate yet comfortable 45 seat theatre with a generous stage.

Atwater Village artistic event - Meeting to discuss proposed event, Oct 25

To: Atwater Village business/art gallery owners, artists and other interested parties

Re: Meeting to discuss a proposed neighborhood chalk festival / art walk

When: Wednesday, October 25, 2006 – 7:30pm

Where: Flynn Art Studios 3765 Legion Lane, Atwater Village (Glenfeliz to Sunnynook which dead ends at the river and Legion Lane)

Objectives: To discuss a possible date for the event, To consider which areas of Atwater to set up the exhibitions, To determine who might help organize the different aspects of the event

The proposal of an artistic event in Atwater Village has been very enthusiastically received.  The positive feedback has come from art galleries, Atwater’s various organizations, local artists and businesses.  So let’s have a meeting to get the ball rolling.

As it is getting late in the year we will probably have to wait out the rainy season for our outdoor festivities.  Late March or late April (after Easter) has been suggested.  Several locations have been mentioned from the Red Car Park to the front of Seagray & Squires, The Complex, Atwater Ranch’s parking lot and the bump outs at Madera Ave.  Or why not all of the above and more?  We should also start throwing out ideas on how to involve the kids, raise money for community programs and bring attention to our neighborhood businesses.  All suggestions will be very much appreciated.

For questions or comments please call Carolyn at (323) 665 – 1901 or email to dexterzmum@aol.com (Importante Gifts)

A Center for Art in Atwater Village

Info: 323-663-3417

Private Art classes began in June at the studios of Atwater artists Ed & Vivian Flynn.

“We have combined the best of both worlds in a relaxed studio work-shop environment where we encourage others to discover their own unique artistic practice. After years of enjoyment making art and teaching in art schools and University Art Departments, we felt that the time is right to extend this experience directly to art students and invite them to take art classes in this unique setting on the banks of the LA River.”

Both 10 week and 12 week Classes  are offered evenings 7:00pm to 10:00pm and Saturdays 9:00 am through12:00pm and 4:00pm to 6:00  and they run throughout the year.

Participants at all levels of experience are welcome from beginners to art professionals.

Flynn Studios is a studio workshop environment for artistic experimentation to develop the skills and tools needed to expand an artists’ visual vocabulary. A place where support and encouragement from instructors and peers helps to build confidence and trust your creativity. Expressing your unique point of view through dialogue with other artists. Group discussion encourages art making, survival skills and ways to broaden your concepts and goals.
