SILVER LAKE SUPPORTS LEGALIZING RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA USE; ATWATER VILLAGE ASKED TO DO THE SAME

In a email dated 04/29/2009 Marijuana Policy Project asks the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council (AVNC) Board to issue a statement in support of assembly bill A.B. 390. Bill A.B. 390 would legalize marijuana for other uses besides medical use.

"Dear neighborhood council member,

As you have likely already heard in the news, various high-profile officials have been considering regulating and taxing marijuana as an alternative to prohibition, a policy that is widely believed to have failed. The California legislature is currently considering such a proposal in the form of an assembly bill, A.B. 390, authored by Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) earlier this year.

At their
April 1 meeting, the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council overwhelmingly approved a resolution supporting A.B. 390 and the policy of regulating marijuana like alcohol.

It’s our hope that neighborhood councils all over Los Angeles join Silver Lake in calling for a rational debate about the efficacy of marijuana prohibition.

As the California policy director for the
Marijuana Policy Project – a nonprofit working to end prohibition – I’d be happy to help draft such a resolution and make a presentation before your council.

Please let me know if you are interested in introducing a resolution of this nature at an upcoming neighborhood council meeting or if you have any questions or concerns about this issue. A PDF fact-sheet about A.B. 390 is available online,
here.

Together we can work towards a sensible policy that will reduce teen availability to marijuana, de-fund violent drug cartels and make our streets safer – all while generating revenue for important programs like drug education and public safety. Feel free to contact me anytime at
asmith@mpp.org or (707) 575-9870 for more information.

Thank you for your time and attention to this important matter.

Sincerely,

Aaron Smith
