AVNW 08.16.2006 Meeting Recap

A quick update and recap of Wednesday’s meeting (08.16.2006), (which by the way, was a good one and well attended). (Fear not, I will return with the newsletter format next month.)

Donna Wong, the Deputy City Attorney and Neighborhood Prosecutor for the Northeast area is conducting an informative meeting on Tuesday, August 22, regarding property rights and options for renters and property owners. Please contact Donna at Donna.Wong@lacity.org for more details.

We opened up discussions on the fundraising needs to bring the Inside Out Community Arts program to the Washington Irving Middle School in January. Contacts on this so far, are Catherine Dent and Lisa Fontanesi—the arts and education committee chairs of the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council and Kabira Stokes Hochberg, Field Representative for City Council District 13. Also, I am happy to report that Carol Moore-- our neighborhood anti-graffiti czarina-- is also acting events coordinator. She has already rolled up her sleeves and is working on some exciting, out-of-the-box ideas to get the funding for the Inside Out program. Her enthusiasm is infectious… if you want to catch it, contact Carol at spreadpublicity@yahoo.com and see how you can help her.

There is a parent/teacher after school meeting at the Washington Irving Middle School on September 6. I will let you all know the outcome.
Carol is also planning a number of community beautification and fun events for September. She will be heading a river paint-out on Saturday, September 9 at 10:00, beginning at the entrance to the Red Car Park. Some folks expressed interest in extending this event to paint out the graffiti north of the Hyperion Bridge towards Los Feliz. Please coordinate your efforts with Carol. And, this just in—we just got word of the approved river paint-out permit from the Hollywood Beautification Team, who will be instrumental in our efforts— this is big (and great) news. Kudos to Kabira and everyone at CD13 who has been working on this.

September 9th is also the Glassell Park Community Festival, from 10-4. For those of you who plan to help on the paint-out, come on by afterward. For the rest of you, let me know if you are interested in manning a table and trying to raise money for the Inside Out and Taking the Reins funding. The event will be at the Glassell Park Recreation Center,
3650 Verdugo Road
. Admission is free. For more information, please visit http://www.gpia.org .

September 24 is the Albert Kinney Festival in Venice. This event raises funds for the Inside Out Community Arts program, who—in turn, are raising funds to help subsidize the program slated for the Washington Irving Middle School. Let me, Carol or Kabira (Kabira.Stokes.Hochberg@lacity.org) know if you would like to help work this event.

Carol has also proposed a fun outdoor movie night at the Red Car River Park. Food and popcorn are being planned and the proposed movie will definitely be “G,” so tell your neighbors and bring your kids. Carol will send out a flyer announcing this and we will also bring it up at our next meeting. It is tentatively scheduled for Friday night, September 29th.

Speaking of which, the next Neighborhood Watch meeting is tentatively scheduled for September 13th. Mark your calendars.
